Please enjoy this month's featured combo page...
even though it took me a few months to post it. :)
NOTE: Recently added deck links are
moved up to the top of the page. For instance, on 8/15 I added
deck links for Martial Coup - Twilight Shepherd, Goblin Razerunners -
Forgotten Ancient and Mindlock Orb - Maralen of the Mornsong. |
Martial
Coup - Twilight Shepherd |
Play
Martial Coup with Twilight Shepherd in play with X being five or more.
All creatures will be destroyed, except for the the new tokens.
Because of Persist, the Shepherd comes back and you get back all of the
cards that went to the graveyard that turn from play.
An all-White combo too! Submitted by death_by_aggro. |
 |
Goblin
Razerunners - Forgotten Ancient |
YWN
suggested this two card combos (amongst some others) to capitilize on
the Razerunners end of turn ability, in which it deals damage equal to
the number of +1/+1 counters on it to target player. Forgotten
Ancient is one option. Other options include Daily Regimen, Swell
of Courage and Temper.If
you plan on going the land route, Tobiaz recommends Crucible of Worlds
to balance out your mana base given all the lands you will be
sacrificing. |
 |
Esperzoa
- Mindlock Orb - Maralen of the Mornsong |
AlasterEisaroh
suggests this threesome combo. With all three cards in play,
whenever your opponent draws a card, Maralen will replace that with her
effect but thanks to Mindlock Orb (players can't search libraries) it
fizzles. And thus they don't draw a card. Not the life loss though.
Your opponent will still lose three life a turn. Come your
turn, use Esperzoa to bounce the Mindlock Orb so that you still get to
search out a card from your library with Maralen's
ability. Play the Mindlock Orb against and you have yourself a
psuedo lockdown.death_by_agrro suggests
using Esperzoa with Pithing Needle so you can change the card it
restricts whenever needed. And then YWN suggests using Esperzoa with Elseware
Flash or Kaleidostone. Drawing cards is fun. Esperzoa also works great with Parasitic Strix
according to Planeswalker, as long as you control a black permanent. So many fun interactions with Esperzoa... so little
time... The deck link
for this combo is missing Esperzoa, but has Colfenor's Plans in its
place. Orb and Maralen are there. |
 |
Conflux
- Dream Halls |
While
this combo was originally submitted by AlasterEisaroh, it wasn't long
after the release of Conflux that someone else in the world figured out
these two cards had a fantastic interaction (see deck link to the left).
Not only can you use any colored card in your hand to pitch to play
Conflux for free while Dream Halls is in play, but you can use the five
cards you search out with Conflux to pay for each other and win you the
game. AlasterEisaroh was suggesting two Cruel Ultimatums and three
other cards. Dream Halls makes the multicolored bombs from the
last block a little better and a lot easier to play. |

Charnelhoard
Wurm - Soul's Fire |
If
you are a tournament forum monger you have most likely already heard
about this combo. Some people tried to abuse it and make it work.
I'm not sure how that panned out but I know I didn't play against any
decks using these two cards at Regionals.
This combo was submitted by Arix and here is what he had to say about
the two card combo: "Charnelhoard Wurm + Soul's Fire. Soul's Fire makes the
Wurm deal six to your opponent, triggering its ability, and letting you
return the Soul's Fire to your hand to repeat. End result? for six damage,
at instant speed, again and again and again." |
 |
Elder
Mastery - Academy Researchers |
Elder
Mastery is one of those impressive Aura
cards, aka Enchant Creature cards, that has a dramatic impact on the
creature but costs an arm and a leg to cast. One easy way to get around
those is to play Academy Researchers while you have the Elder Mastery in
hand. When the Researchers come into play, just attach Elder
Mastery to the Researches for free and call it a day. Suddenly
your Researchers are the Elder Researchers of Doom and Destruction as a
5/5 flying, double discarder monstrosity. Submitted by Mad Mat.

Sedraxis
Alchemist - Vedalken Mastermind |
While
we don't have Man'-o-war in Standard, we do have Sedraxis Alchemist.
Unfortunately, you have to have a blue permanent in play in order for
his bounce effect to
happen. That's where Vedalken Mastermind comes in. Not only
with the mastermind satisfy the blue permanent requirement of the
Alchemist, but it will also allow you to keep bouncing the Alchemist
back to you hand so you can play it again and bounce more nonland
permanents more often.! Submitted by YWN. |

Did
you know...? |

I've recently updated the deck link buttons on new combo
pages so keep reading to find out more about them.
Blue buttons are deck links that link to a deck using the
combo it's next to. Mind you, not all deck links are going to
center around that particular combo, although most do.
Red buttons indicate that I'm looking for a deck using that
combo. To suggest a deck you can either
post it in the casual deck forum or
email it to me. In both scenarios
be sure to note which combo the deck is for. Linking to the
original combo page helps!
If there is no blue or red button next to the right of
a combo that means I'm not looking for a deck for that combo nor is
there a deck in the
MDV Deck Database list using it (that
I'm aware of).

Wall
of Reverence - Cradle of Vitality |
I
was always a fan of
Temper back from the Tempest block. These two cards make
Temper obsolete. Wall
of Reference is going to gain you, at a minimum, one life a turn.
Use Cradle of Vitality to make that life gain also net you some +1/+1
counters. Put it on whatever creature has the highest power so
that the next turn you can gain that much more life and that many more
+1/+1 counters. It's a vicious but terribly rewarding cycle.
Who said life gain was bad?? Submitted by Tekkactus. |
 |
Malfegor
- Burning Sands |
This
is what I call adding insult to injury. Malfegor's comes into play
ability is devastating enough. When you add Burning Sands into the
mix, not only will they be sacrificing their creatures, but they will
also be sacrificing their lands. Ouch. I like land
destruction, and big Dragons, but I think these two cards should be
banned from being in the same deck. That and Burning Sands is just
a little over the top with Malfegor. |
 |
Sigil
of the Empty Throne - Shackles or Flickering Ward |
Sigil
of the Empty Thrones is a great card is your deck is packed with
enchantment cards. However, if it isn't and you still want to
maximize the efficiency of the Empty Thorne, try out one of the various
bounce enchantments such as Shackles and Flickering Ward. You only
need one of these to keep playing, bouncing, playing, bouncing and
playing them. Each two white mana you spend nets you a 4/4 white
Angel creature token with flying. Submitted by SKEITH.
Rorschach recommends Recurring Nightmare while YWN
recommends Sigil with anything that combo'd with Celestial Ancient and
Mesa Enchantress in previous MDV combo pages. True that!

 |
Master
Transmuter - Sharuum the Hegemon |
Here's
an interesting pair of cards. One card bounces another artifact to
your hand (like Sharuum) to put something from your hand into play while
the other has a nifty comes into play that takes an artifact from your
graveyard and puts it into play.
There are quite a few different
artifacts you could be targetting between these two cards, but no matter
what it is these two cards spell combo. Have fun choosing some
artifacts to play along side them two ladies. |
 |
Knight
of the Reliquary - Countryside Crusher |
Warning!
Awesome synergy alert! While these two cards do just fine on their
own, when combined the two work hand in hand. Or shall I say land in
land... In any event,
while the Crusher is filling up your graveyard with lands and getting
bigger, it will also make the Knight. If you choose the activate
the Knight's ability, both cards will benefit as well. Not only
will you be serving some serious beatdown, but you will be thinning your
deck and drawing more spells more often. |
 |
Paleoloth
- Cloudthresher or Walker of the Grove or Spitebellows... |
Paleoloth
will allow you to regurgitate your evoke spells over and over again as
long as you have one in hand and one in your graveyard and it's an evoke
creature whose power if five or greater. Some good examples
include Cloudtresher, Walker of the Grove and Spitebellows.
Submitted by YWN. |
 |
Nyxathid
- Uba Mask |
One
way to ensure your Nyxathid isn't going to be weakened by your
opponent's handsize is discard. The more Johnny way to do it is
using cards like Uba Mask that don't actually let your opponent draw a
card. Instead they remove it from the game, keeping Nyxathid big
and your oppnent's handsize low.
Submitted by Mad Mat. |
 |
Extractor
Demon - Ichorid |
Silly
combo, but it works. If the 5/5 flying extractor demon doesn't
kill your opponent, and the recurring and annoying Ichorid doesn't kill
your opponent, just keep recurring and sacricicing the Ichorid to
activate the Demon's ability of milling your opponent's library.
I'm going to assume one of the two cards will kill your opponent long
before you ever mill them to death.
Submitted by death_by_aggro.Tresserhorn
recommends: Extractor Demon + Sharuum + Sharuum/
Sculpting Steel = Infinite Mill. |
 |
Magister
Sphinx - Hidetsugu's Second Rite |
Two
cards that spell I win. Magister Sphinx makes an opponent's life
equal 10. Second Rite deals 10 damage to a player that has exactly
10 life. Seems easy enough to me.
Submitted by Trapezoid. |
 |
Jhessian
Balmgiver - Rafiq of the Many |
With
Rafiq of the Many, to maximize his double-strike giving ability, you
want to attack with the highest power creature you have. The
unfortanate side to that is, unless it has evasion, it can be
potentially blocked. Why not prevent the opportunity
of being blocked entirely and use the
Balmgiver to make your best creature unblockable. You may find
yourself winning more with these two cards. |
 |
Gwafa
Hazid, Profiteer - Psychic Possession |
YWN
submitted this combo and states, "If the drawback for pacifying
creatures without an actual Pacifism is to give cards to its controller,
there are ways to make that work in our favor..." And true that
statement is. YWN suggests Psychic Possession, so that you too
will be drawing a card.
As an alternate choice YWN suggested Maralen of
Mornsong. I think you can figure that out. |
 |
Scattershot
Archer - Lace with Moonglove or Quiteus Spike |
Scattershot
Archer is a great way to bring down Faerie tokens. It's also a
great way to hurt your friend's Bird deck. If you really want to
bring the hurt to any player that loves flying creatures, slap a Quietus
Spike on the Archer or play Lash with Moonglove. Suddenly, he has
deathtouch and kills every creature he pings. Sounds like a good
deal to me. |
 |
Prismatic
Omen - Exploding Borders or Worldly Counsel or Tribal Flames |
Warning
again! Synergy alert. This is one of those obvious
interactions but that some may overlook. There are many ways to achieve
the maximum effect of Domain spells, the best of which is Prismatic
Omen. For only two mana, suddenly each land you control is every
basic land type. So when you play a card like Exploding Borders,
you are going to deal 5 damage. Or Worldly Counsel is going to let
you look through five cards.
Again, it's an obvious interaction but a potent one. Turn your
Domain spells into a bomb every time. Submitted by YWN! |

Your
Combo Here! |
|
You could have your combo featured in this spot right here
(not literally, but on a future combo page).
Email
the
webmaster
with any combos you'd like to submit. Try to
make sure your combo works and that there isn't already that combo on
any other MDV combo page. You can always
Search Magic
Deck Vortex with the search tool to make sure before
submitting it. I greatly appreciate your efforts
to make these combo pages better. Every once in a while I have a
page chock-full of your submitted combos... although I will admit about
75% of all submitted combos are duplicates.
