October 2008 --  in reverse order. Discuss Here

Elfball Redux 2008.

Deck of the Day - Friday, October 18, 2008

Elfball Redux 2008. To quote this deck's creator, "Before Eventide, there was a passable "Elfball" deck. Elfball is a bit of a classic. It first showed up around the time of Urza's Saga and at the time used Priest of Titania, Gaea's Cradle, and Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary to generate huge amounts of mana for a big Fireball. When Onslaught came out, it took a different twist, with Wirewood Lodge and Seeker of Skybreak enabling Wirewood Channeler to play really big spells..." Keep reading! This deck is from the most recent deck database update (82 new decks). If you haven't checked them out, please click here.

Deep Im-Pact.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, October 17, 2008

Deep Im-Pact. For all general purposes, this is a Night Dealings deck that seeks to search out low costed spells like Breath of Darigaaz and even cheaper spells like Pact of the Titan and Slaughter Pact. There are a few other combos put instead of me telling you about them here, why don't you click the link and read up on it for yourself? This deck is from the most recent deck database update (82 new decks). If you haven't checked them out, please click here.

The Pinnacle of Winning.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, October 15, 2008

The Pinnacle of Winning. This deck should really be called "the pinnacle of infinite mana possibilities that can ultimately fuel a Helix Pinnacle to win the game." Staff of Domination, Transguild Courier with Bloom Tender, Umbral Mantle and Rofellos, Llanowar Emissary... Shall I go on. Its mono-green too! Go, go mono-green combo decks. This deck is from the most recent deck database update (82 new decks). If you haven't checked them out, please click here.

Riftleveler.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, October 14, 2008

Riftleveler. The combo involving Leveler and Beacon of Tomorrows which can give you infinite turns is nothing new. However, if you want to expand from the Beacons and make better use of the Leveler you can include a card like Riftsweeper much like Chris Millar did in this deck. Riftsweeper will give you access to a card otherwise removed from the game after the Leveler entered play. Combine with Cloudstone Curio and a bunch of elves, and you have a fun concoction of cards that capable of tutoring any card in the deck once a turn.  NOTE: This doesn't work as well against a mill deck... This deck is from the most recent deck database update (82 new decks). If you haven't checked them out, please click here.

Jokulpox.

Deck of the Day - Monday, October 13, 2008

Jokulpox. As the name suggests, this deck combines to power of Jokulhaups and Pox. Not suggested in the title are cards like Brood of Cockroaches, Mana Flare, Kuon, Ogre Ascendant and Homura, Human Ascendant. I'll let your imagination go from there... or you could click on the link. This deck is from the most recent deck database update (82 new decks). If you haven't checked them out, please click here.

Pebbles Kinda...

Deck of the Day - Thursday, October 9, 2008

Pebbles Kinda... At this deck's core, it runs two cards that are well known as Pebbles pieces: Ornithoper and Enduring Renewal. However, this is not a Pebbles deck. The deck actually revolves around Bridge from Below. If you want to see what else this casual deck engineer put in this decklist, click on the link.

September 2008 --  in reverse order. Discuss Here

Mind Vise.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, September 17, 2008

Mind Vise. This deck sports some of my favorite cards including Triskelion, Metalworker, Black Vise, Copy Artifact, Karn and Prosperity.  While this can easily be considered a MILL deck because of Prosperity and Metalworker, it is more or less a BURN deck in the form of Black Vise.  The goal is to generate a lot of mana, play a huge Prosperity and have one or more Black Vise in play before your opponent's next turn.  Come their turn, the Black Vise will kill them or do a large amount of damage...

Pact of Nath.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, September 16, 2008

Pact of Nath. Today's deck was featured in an article on www.wizards.com from a while back.  The author of the article was The Ferrett and he had the following to say about this deck...

"You don't need to be genius to get the main idea of the deck: Opponents discard cards --> You get Elves. Your Elves die --> opponent's creatures die. What happens if you have Nath and Grave Pact in the game and you use Smallpox? Everyone loses 1 life, discards a card (giving you Elf tokens), everyone sacrifices a creature (you sacrifice one of your tokens) and because of Grave Pact your opponents sacrifice another creature. Then everyone sacrifices a land."

Seems like a good deck to me.

I Hate Everyone.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, September 10, 2008

I Hate Everyone. Spectral Searchlight is a very cool artifact from the Kami Block.  There is nothing better than making your opponent lose a game because of a Spectral induced mana burn...  This deck featured Genjus, the Searchlight and some other fun cards from around that time.  Note: I don't hate you.

Allergic to Lace.

Deck of the Day - Monday, September 8, 2008

Allergic to Lace. To quote the creator of this deck, MaGo, "Y’know what would be awfully cool? A deck revolving around a rare centerpiece from The Dark. I think everyone would really appreciate that. The card in question is the mondo bizarro Psychic Allergy. It’s your typical blue damage-dealing enchantment that requires hefty land sacrifices to keep it on the board. All that talk of the Color Pie that Rosewater does in his column? It’s to prevent eye-popping head-scratchers like this from showing up again..."

5cElementals 2007.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, September 3, 2008

5cElementals 2007. This is one of the decks that was used as a gun-slinging deck at one of WotC's tournament events in 2007. Chris Millar was among the people piloting these decks and this was one of two decks he played mostly for the event.  You can read up more on it by clicking on the link.

Pine Needles.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, September 2, 2008

Pine Needles. This is an interesting deck as it uses two specific creatures to control the board: Bane of the Living and Silklash Spider. Combine them will Putrefy and Rend Flesh to continue the creature control.  Then add some beaters like Twisted Abomination and Kavu Titan -- and you have a nice Beatdown/Control deck that's sure to stomp all over your opponent's at your next casual gathering.

August 2008 --  in reverse order. Discuss Here

Sweet Dreams.

Deck of the Day - Friday, August 8, 2008

Sweet Dreams. If you like Nightmare, you'll like this deck.  If you like mono-black decks, you'll like this deck.  If you like Nightmare tribal decks, you'll also like this deck.  Today's deck of the day is a great way to get into the groove of playing with your Nightmare cards.  It has Recurring Nightmare, Altar of Dementia and Terror to keep the game interesting.  If you want to see what I mean, click on the link.

Mind Games.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, August 7, 2008

Mind Games. This is a typical control-mill style deck packing cards like Scalpelexis, Ambassador Laquatus, Standstill and Circular Logic. Check it out -- you might find a card you need to put in your own control-mill deck list.  Or you might want to build a control-mill deck for the first time.  Go ahead... play some mind games next time at your local play group gathering...

Hydraponics.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Hydraponics. This deck packs many heads in the form of one of Magic's most underplayed and underappreciated tribes: Hydrae. Packed with cards like Rock Hydra, Molten Hydra, Mana Flare and Fling, this deck sure provide some fun gameplay and possibly even a few wins. You may want to rethink this decklist and find some newer cards to make it more spicy. Go ahead... give it a try!

Molten Temper.

Deck of the Day - Friday, August 1, 2008

Molten Temper. Wow. It's a deck submission from the Temper, Temper deckbuilding contest. This was one of the first contests of Magic Deck Vortex from over five years ago. That's right, as of mid-July, MDV is six years old!!! Back to the deck, this deck uses Temper to beef up cards like Molten Hydra, Suntail Hawk and Kilnmouth Dragon. Mind you, this deck was built long before the +1/+1 counter goodness of Mirrodin Block and Lorwyn block. Check it out, update it and make it your own!

July 2008 --  in reverse order. Discuss Here

Erhnam Burn'em.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, July 30, 2008

Erhnam Burn'em. To quote Inquest magazine, where I originally found this deck and description: "Erhnam & Burn Em's midgame strategy is similar to Erhnamgeddon's. Instead of Swords to Plowshares to remove the opponent's creatures, you have Bolts, Incinerates, and/or Stormbind, and instead of Wrath of God, you have Earthquake or Pyroclasm. Against small creatures, you're in great shape, but larger creatures are more of a problem; you'll need to spend two cards to take out one..."

Warlord Deluxe.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, July 29, 2008

Warlord Deluxe. I never thought Keldon Warlord was such a great card that it deserved a deck built around it. However, I've been proven wrong on multiple occasions so today's deck doesn't surprise me. Except the means this deck uses to benefit the Warlord does slightly surprise me. Cards include: Fungal Bloom, Thallids, Goblin Offensive and Saproling Symbiosis. Does it work well together? Looks like you'll just have to try it out yourself!

Overflow Break.

Deck of the Day - Monday, July 28, 2008

Overflow Break. If I was to tell you there is a deck that includes only one creature playset in it and that creature was Flowstone Overseer, would you believe me? Well, believe me. Today's deck of the day is a red aggro deck using some land destruction and some burn to obliterate the opponent. Stone Rain, Pillage, Seal of Fire, Cave-In and Hammer of Bogardan... all cards within the deck. Whether or not you are curious, you should still check the deck out...

Webbed.

Deck of the Day - Friday, July 25, 2008

Webbed. This is both a tribal Spider deck and a theme web deck. Complete with cards like Plated Spider, Pincer Spider, Bequeathal and Magnetic Web, this deck is designed to bring down any flower your opponent should cast. Since this deck was originally built there have been some better spiders. Check it out, rebuild it and have fun.

Weather Report v2.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, July 24, 2008

Weather Report v2. If you like Theme Decks, you'll really like this one.  And that's not just because Neuromancer, resident MDV forum moderator, engineered the deck.  No... it's because it's a fun weather themed deck including excellent cards like Stone Rain, Tornado Elemental and Ice Storm just to name a few.  Can you think of some of the other potential cards in this deck?  Go ahead, brainstorm about it before you click the link.

Vampires & Moons.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, July 23, 2008

Vampires & Moons. Grimclaw Bats, Sengir Vampire, Bad Moon and Drain Life... what more could you ask for in a mono-black tribal/theme deck? Not much. This deck packs cheap creatures, powerful vampires, removal and permanent creature pump thanks to the bad moon. The only real thing missing is some legendary lands for flavor.

Mom's Zombie Deck.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, July 22, 2008

Mom's Zombie Deck. What on earth is a MOM'S Zombie Deck? If it was Mon's Zombie Deck, I would assume it was a goblin zombie deck. However, this is Mom's. Is it an old school zombie deck? Looks like you are just going to have to click on the link and find out!

FIVE - A Deck.

Deck of the Day - Monday, July 21, 2008

FIVE - A Deck. Chris Millar, a regular columnist for www.wizards.com, wrote an article some time ago in which he put together several decks using only one-syllable named Magic cards.  For instance, Mulch and Jinx are both one syllable card names.  He made one for each color and then made one of all five colors.  Today's deck of the day is the five-color version.  If not anything else, it is certainly amusing.

Second Nature.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, July 17, 2008

Second Nature. Primarily, this is a Dual Nature deck loaded with creatures that have great comes into play abilities.  Unfortunately, the other combo in the deck, which is Unnatural Selection and Dual Nature, doesn't work as the deck originally intended it to.  You can thank Oracle updates and the Legendary rule change brought about after the Kamigawa Block.  In any event, you should find the rest of the deck enjoyable.

Ashling's Leprechaun.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, July 16, 2008

Ashling's Leprechaun. Today's deck centered around one card: Ashling's Prerogative (Here all my life I thought Prerogative was spelled without the first "r"). If you recall the card you are going to ask, is it an even or an odd themed deck? The answer is EVEN. Cards like Leaf Glider, Thelonite Hermit and Masked Admirers are all even to cast. They are also all Elf. This is also a tribal elf deck. Curious? Click the link!

Out of Ideas.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, July 15, 2008

Out of Ideas. This deck is a great way to leave your opponent without any ideas (spells) so that you can cast a Hunted Wumpus without too much fear of your opponent having something nasty to play for free.  Thus the deck name (leaving your opponent) Out of Ideas... or something like that...

Tenacious Tron.

Deck of the Day - Monday, July 14, 2008

Tenacious Tron. What's not to like about the deck title? This deck won 1st place in a 2007 tournament and was then covered on MTG.COM by Mike Flores. Flores states that, "[this deck] is differentiated from other U/W "big mana" decks via the inclusion of Gifts Ungiven, and the packages that arise from such a different card drawing engine..." To read more, click on the link.  This deck and description were quoted from www.magicthegathering.com.

Swirling Sanctuaries.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, July 8, 2008

Swirling Sanctuaries. To quote the great Neuromancer on his deck: "This deck revolves around Swirl The Mists' color-altering effect. That effect is put to use with the Apocalypse Sanctuaries to generate massive card advantage and a veritable win condition with Necra Sanctuary. Drift of Phantasms and Academy Rector find the combo pieces, and the deck has a solid disruption package with Duress, Cabal Therapy, Vindicate and STP..."

Insect Swarm.

Deck of the Day - Monday, July 7, 2008

Insect Swarm. Wow!  It's always amusing to look at an old deck you created... Today's deck of the day is one of those occasions for me.  This was a deck I created to abuse Pattern of Rebirth except within a Tribal Insect deck frame.  To combo with Pattern of Rebirth I used Giant Caterpillar and Marker Beetles.  Targets for the Pattern enchantment included Gigapede and Thriss to name a few.  I wonder what this deck would look like with the current batch of insects out there now... Maybe you want to build it!  What's cool is that you can find ways to use Pattern of Rebirth in many different Tribal decks.  Give it a try; I dare you!

The American Way.

Deck of the Day - Friday, July 4, 2008

The American Way.This is a deck from Inquest #134.  Let me just give you their intro for the deck... "Boros. Izzet. Azorius. That’s not only American’s most patriotic alliance; it’s also a deck that has the answer or threat for every situation. With a guild from every set, this Ravnica block deck is packing seven current and former top-10 cards, which means your lineup’s got more ringers than the New York Yankees crashing an intramural softball league."  Sounds pretty good, doesn't it?! Happy Fourth of July!

Weird American Angels.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, July 3, 2008

Weird American Angels. There is a theme to this week's deck of the day feature, at least since 7/1/08.  That theme is red, white and blue decks inspired by the upcoming Fourth of July.  This deck is a strange concoction of Firemane Angel, Meloku, Shard Phoenix and Zur's Weirding!  Splash in some control elements and some mana acceleration and you have today's deck.

Orcombo Warriors.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, July 2, 2008

Orcombo Warriors. Earlier this year, Cashew hosted a deckbuilding contest called Class-Wars.  For this contest I submitted several decks, one of which won the Most Original Combo category.  This is a Orc Warrior tribal deck that uses Circle of Protection: Red and Whim of Volrath to win the game... in an interesting way.  Why don't you check it out.  I can guarantee you won't find this deck anywhere else.

Star Spangled Slaughter.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, July 1, 2008

Star Spangled Slaughter. This deck is a red-white-blue deck (thus the reference to the "The Star-Spangled Banner", which is the national anthem of the United States of America).  One of the key cards in the deck is Fire/Ice; another is Lightning Angel.  This was a popular deck during the Invasion block and was seen in many different variations.  This deck is one of those variations.

June 2008 --  in reverse order. Discuss Here

Snakestone.

Deck of the Day - Monday, June 30, 2008

Snakestone. Snake tokens are fun. Especially if you have gazillions of them. This isn't necessarily an infinite deck but is a deck that uses Cloudstone Curio in combination with some comes-into-play Snake creatures to generate lots of snake tokens and/or nice effects. As if that wasn't enough, Meloku and Voidslime are also in the deck...

Scorpion Foundry.

Deck of the Day - Friday, June 27, 2008

Scorpion Foundry. Today's deck is capable of going infinite and a LITE deck... although I'd have to check all of the prices on the cards in this deck to make sure it qualifies for LITE status. In any event, this is a fun deck using cards like Bottle Gnomes, Dross Scorpion, Soul Foundry and Myr Moonvessel. You'll just have to read the description to found out how this deck really works. Enjoy!

The Crew!

Deck of the Day - Thursday, June 26, 2008

The Crew! Not only is this a domain deck, but it's a theme deck featuring Legendary creatures and it's packing the power nine!!!  And to top that off, it's lacking a deck description.  If you are interested in adding a description to this deck, please let me know.  Otherwise, know that you could build this deck in any number of different ways.  The Kamigawa block gives this deck some tools for tutoring Legends and every block since this deck was created gives it more options with more Legendary creatures.  Give the deck a spin with your own collection.  Make it your own!

Pango Express.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, June 25, 2008

Pango Express, today's deck of the day, was one of the first decks added to the MDV Deck Database that the webmaster didn't build.  When MDV first started, more than 80% of the decks were all by the webmaster. This deck features Limited Resources with Pangosaur and was built quite some time ago.  Go ahead and update it yourself!

Root Dive.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, June 24, 2008

Root Dive. This deck uses Unifying Theory and that's all it needed for me to fall in love with it. This deck uses Unifying Theory with both Tangleroot and Words of Winds... how does it work? You will just have to click on the deck of the day link to find out. MaGo, the creator of this deck, describes the interaction well. Note: This description was quoted from www.magicthegathering.com.

Enchant Chant.

Deck of the Day - Monday, June 23, 2008

Enchant Chant. I miss doing Top 20 lists for creature types. It's a shame I don't have more time to do those. Today's deck is from the Top 20 Druids article I did in 2006. This deck uses both Enchantresses in combination with Rancor and other powerful Enchantment cards to win the game. Typically the winning card is Endless Wurm who is fueled by heavy card advantage and lots of Auras. If you have some extra time, check out the rest of the article.

Shuffle Extraction.

Deck of the Day - Friday, June 20, 2008

Shuffle Extraction. There's something about copying Psychogenic Probe and then playing cards like Extract that give me that tingly sensation.  I guess I'm just a die hard MILL player.  In other news, this deck is also a description-less deck.  If you are up for the challenge, I am looking for people to write deck descriptions for some of the description-less deck.  If you are interested, please email me.  Thanks.

Restock.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, June 19, 2008

Restock. Being a typical blue player who likes to control the board and counter every spell my opponent plays, I find it strange that I also like land destruction decks. Of course, maybe that isn't a stretch. LD is just a different form of control so I guess it makes sense. Today's deck is a Plow Under / Ice Storm / Sinkhole land destruction deck with some fun twists including Spellweaver Helix and Pernicious Deed. Check it out - you won't be disappointed!

Blind Faith.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, June 18, 2008

Blind Faith. This deck can be defensive.  It can be offensive.  It can be beatdown and at times it can be controllish.  It's an interesting deck that I would encourage you to check out although, be warned.  There are quite a few cards within it that are from the Kamigawa block!

Onulet.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, June 17, 2008

Onulet. In this deck, Abe Sargent, casual guru of Star City Games, tries to make Onulet the center of the deck. What's cool is that it involves Lifeline and Blasting Station. What's unfortunate is that Onulet could easily be replaced with Bottle Gnomes. Still, its a fun deck that you should build and tweak if you have any Onulets in your collection. Enjoy!

Seven Years Bad Luck.

Deck of the Day - Monday, June 16, 2008

Seven Years Bad Luck. If you thought this deck would involve a mirror or sorts upon reading the deck title, you are right. This deck is a single card strategy for Panoptic Mirror. Full of fun control cards like Wrath of God and Discombobulate, this deck is a fun way to use the Mirror. Don't underestimate the low creature count in the deck (only four creature cards total), this deck packs four copies of Decree of Justice for some creature token beatdown.

World of Hurt.

Deck of the Day - Friday, June 13, 2008

World of Hurt. Citadel of Pain AND Manabarbs?! Ouch. To offset the damage from Manabarbs this deck uses Sun Droplet. To prevent the damage from Manabarbs, this deck uses Chimeric Idol to tap all of your lands. What does your opponent have to battle your two vicious red enchantments? Hopefully a Naturalize or a Disenchant.. otherwise they are in trouble!

Brave the Elementals.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, June 12, 2008

Brave the Elementals. Even though this deck was found in a Raiding the Dollar Bins articles, which normally showcases cheap to make decks, it still has a few expensive cards.  Cards like Platinum Angel and Bogardan Hellkite won't be found in your local dollar bins any time soon.  Despite that, this is otherwise cheap to build and focuses on Elemental interactions with an older card known as Heartstone.  Curious?  Click on the link to find out more.

Thallid Shooter.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, June 11, 2008

Thallid Shooter. This deck was by MDV Writer and Contest Admin Cashew and as the deck name suggests, it is a deck that involves Thallids and 'shooting them'. One card that really shines in this deck is Dark Confidant, however, I'll stop there and let you read on. Scroll down from the deck list to see Cashew's beautiful story about the deck. This deck was one of the entrants from the Christmas Contest in 2007; in fact, it was second place!

Urza's Xanthic Howl.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, June 10, 2008

Urza's Xanthic Howl. This is another new deck in MDV's Deck Database thanks to the recent updates from this past weekend.  This particular deck I found on the MTGSalvation forums through Google but I couldn't find the actual thread it was from.  And thus, I don't know the real author of this deck list.  About the deck list: It uses the Urza's Lands in combination with Candelabra of Tawnos to generate a lot of mana.  With this mana you can activate your Xanthic Statue and give it a gigantic Howl from Beyond until end of turn... Looks fun.

Rat Aggro 2005.

Deck of the Day - Monday, June 9, 2008

Rat Aggro 2005. Interesting. This deck is from 2005 but it was just added to the deck database this past weekend... What!? Even more interesting is that the Deck Database has been updated! Hmmm. Back to the deck being featured today... This is a fine example of some of the rat decks that populated Standard back during the CHK era including cards like Chittering Rats, Skullsnatcher and good-ol' Ink Eyes. Let's not forget Aether Vial and Umezawa's Jitte...

Living Swap.

Deck of the Day - Friday, May 6, 2008

Living Swap. As the author states in his description, this deck is not your typical Living Death deck nor is it a toolbox recursion deck. It's loaded with Spike creatures, Triskelions, Eternal Witnesses and more. Aside from lands, there are only six non-creature spells in the whole deck. That should tell you. In any event, this deck has a good deck description so I'll stop blabbering about it and let you click on the link to find out for yourself. If you build a deck similar to this, increase the Triskelion count...

Livin' on the Edge.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, May 5, 2008

Livin' on the Edge. Oh how I miss Inquest Magazine. Not that Scrye is bad, its just that Scrye isn't as mindful to the casual players as it is to the tournament players. Perhaps that is what keeps Scrye in business and magazines like Inquest out of business. In any event, today's deck of the day is a Recursion deck using Gleancrawler to interact cards like Grave-Shell Scarab and Vulturous Zombies. Last Gasp much?

Spell Shaping.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, May 4, 2008

Spell Shaping. Coat of Arms was never meant for cards like Latulla and Kirs Mage... but hey! Why not? Mark of Fury, Thran Dynamo and Coat of Arms all support your Spellshapers as a tribe. Squee combos with all of them and Violent Eruption makes good use of the discarding you will be doing. The biggest problem this deck will have is card advantage. However, this is really just a conceptual deck in need of some major tweaking - by you!

Lightly Armed.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, May 3, 2008

Lightly Armed. There's something about Kamahl, Fist of Krosa that says BEATDOWN, AGGRO and STOMPY. Overrun on a stick? I'll take that any day. However, when you combine the green Kamahl with a red Sorcery known as Pyroclasm, suddenly this beatdown king becomes a king of Land Destruction (LD). Click on the deck to see more...

Light'em Up!

Deck of the Day - Monday, June 2, 2008

Light'em Up! If you like burning things, you'll like this deck. If you like burning things using not-so-expensive components, you'll really like this deck. This deck combines cards like Volcanic Hammer, Lightning Blast, Shock and Magma Jet. The unfortunate part of this deck: Isochron Scepter. Why unfortunate? It's not so cheap anymore. So I take back everything I said about this deck using cheap components...

Mutant Decking.

Deck of the Day - Friday, May 30, 2008

Mutant Decking. This deck was a submission into a deck building contest Magic Deck Vortex hosted in early 2003. How time flies, right? The name of the contest was Mutant Mayhem. Anyway, this deck uses a variety of card combinations some which involve the legendary Ambassador Laquatus to deck an opponent. I'll let you figure out the rest. Enjoy!

Egg-Shrine-ance.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, May 29, 2008

Egg-Shrine-ance. There is something about playing a deck full of eggs, a shrine and a tribute for the win.  This deck using the Eggs from Odyssey in combination with Aven Shrine and Test of Endurance for an alternate life-gain win.  If you don't understand how this could work I would strongly encourage you to click on the deck link and see the deck.  I actually have a variation of this deck built and ready to play.

Red Skelion.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, May 28, 2008

Red Skelion. Ponza never looked better than this deck. Why you ask? Because it includes Triskelion in the main deck list. Believe it or not this deck made top eight somewhere in the world.  If you missed out on my article yesterday, it was about my love for Triskelion. It only makes sense to follow up the article with a deck using 'skelion. In other news, there won't be a Words from the Streetz today -- I didn't have time to finish that up.

Nantuko Revolt.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, May 27, 2008

Nantuko Revolt. This here is an ANTI deck. A deck that is specifically designed to counter another deck type, strategy or deck color. In this deck's case, it is an Anti-Black deck. Oh wait, never mind. This is actually a combo deck using Pygmy Kavu and Nantuko Blightcutter in combination with Darkest Hour (makes all creatures in play black). However, there are ANTI decks in MDV's deck database, found on this page.

Mobil Station.

Deck of the Day - Friday, May 23, 2008

Mobil Station. Not only does the deck name of today's featured deck amuse me, but the major card combination within it amuses me too: Death Match + Mobilization.  I loved Death Match in draft and constructed during the Onslaught time frame and seeing is paired up with Mobilization seems like a match made in heaven.  But how is the rest of the deck executed?  You'll just have to click on to find out!

Rabid Librarian.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, May 22, 2008

Rabid Librarian. This, my friend, is from Inquest Magazine number four. Believe it or not, someone, about a year ago, requested me to find this deck. I found it, added it to the deck database and here it is again, only this time being featured on MDV's Deck of the Day feature. It's a mill deck and it uses an interesting combo: Martyr's Cry and Heaven's Gate!? You know you want to click on the deck link...

Wishing Well.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, May 21, 2008

Wishing Well. This deck is also known as ProsBloom and was a very innovative deck of its time.  Played by Mike Long, it won PT Paris in the Mirage Block Constructed category.  This deck combined Prosperity, Squandered Resources and Cadaverous Bloom to generate a lot of mana which is then funneled into a really big Drain Life for the win.  It's fun to play and relatively easy to put together (nowadays).

Discard Draw.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, May 20, 2008

Discard Draw. I don't know that the power of this deck compares to its similarly named Draw Go deck, however it does involve a similar strategy.  Make them discard, then go.  This deck uses its creatures to make them discard combined with some mill cards and some removal.  I would encourage you to update this decklist with your own collection and if it works out, submit it to the MDV Deck Database.

Wizards of the Moon.

Deck of the Day - Friday, May 16, 2008

Wizards of the Moon. The deck name is creatively referring to the creature types within the deck: Wizards and Moonfolk. Its win conditions include Soratami Savant, Soratami Rainshaper and Meloku, the Clouded Mirror. There are some fun tricks you can do with Trinket Mage too. Not only is this a tribal deck, but it's a LITE deck too so you should be able to pick up the majority of its pieces for minimal cost.  You can pick up Meluko nowadays for $4 and under.

Rat Extraction.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, May 15, 2008

Rat Extraction. There are some cards in Magic: the Gathering that are abusive. Then there are cards that are annoying. Combine those two types of cards with some other intrusive cards and Walla! You have today's deck. I'll sum this up quickly: Shared Fate - Relentless Rats - Cranial Extraction - Leveler...  I don't need to go on, but you do need to click on the link because you want to see how MaGo executed these cards together in the same deck.  (MaGo = Mark Gottlieb @ WotC).

Switcharoo.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Switcharoo. About Face was this quicky card from Urza's Legacy that switched a creatures power and toughness. Then came Betrayers of Kamigawa when they introduced Mannichi, the Fevered Dream which does it to every creature in play. Combine it with creatures with high toughness and evasion like Ensouled Scimitar, and suddenly you have a good deck. Click the link to see what else JMS put in the deck.

Discord.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, May 13, 2008

Discord. Playing a bunch of spells that hurt you just doesn't sound right and I suppose that is where today's deck gets its name. Either that or it is because one of the key cards in the deck is Discordant Spirit. Both it and Blood Hound get better when you take damage so cards like Flame Rift and Aftershock make your creatures better and your opponent's board position worse. You'll just have to check this one out for yourself. If you like the concept, build it, tweak it and have fun playing Magic: the Gathering.

Acidic GU.

Deck of the Day - Monday, May 12, 2008

Acidic GU. Today's deck is all about Dream Acid. In fact, its a single-Card Strategy deck around Dream Acid. It includes cards like Dream Stalker, Drake Familiar and Tolarian Sentinel to bounce it back to your card and kill the permanent it was attached to. Other cards in the deck are beatdown esque. Curious? Check it out.

Army of the Faithful.

Deck of the Day - Friday, May 9, 2008

Army of the Faithful. If you missed Cashew Week the week of 5.5.08 then you missed out on this deck. It's a Fallen Empires inspired white weenie deck including cards like Preacher, Order of Leitbur, Aeolipile and Icatian Infantry.  If you scroll down in his article you see the opposite of this deck by Tynion.  Be sure and check out the rest of the articles from Cashew's unofficial official Sarpadian Empires week. [Sorry today's Deck of the Day is late].

Swirling Sanctuaries.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, May 8, 2008

Swirling Sanctuaries. To quote the great Neuromancer on his deck: "This deck revolves around Swirl The Mists' color-altering effect. That effect is put to use with the Apocalypse Sanctuaries to generate massive card advantage and a veritable win condition with Necra Sanctuary. Drift of Phantasms and Academy Rector find the combo pieces, and the deck has a solid disruption package with Duress, Cabal Therapy, Vindicate and STP..."

What the Muck!

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, May 7, 2008

What the Muck! Here's a LITE (cheap to put together) deck for your perusal including some not-so-often used black cards. Ironic though that since this deck was created some of these commons and uncommons have actually gone up in price. Anyway, this deck uses cards like Fog of Gnats, Endless Scream, Bubbling Much, Spike Cannibal and others to win the game. Besides being a fun mono-black beatdown deck, it has a fantastically creative name. What the Muck? What's not to love?

The Blue Zone.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, May 6, 2008

The Blue Zone. For the record, I didn't plan on having Guma in today's deck as I picked the deck pretty much at random. This deck features cards like Fylamarid, Metathran Transport, Razorfin Hunter and one of my favorites -- Curiosity! Combined with Parch, Fire/Ice and Seal of Removal, you have yourself a fun little blue-red control/combo-like deck. This is also a LITE deck.

Guma Glasses.

Deck of the Day - Monday, May 5, 2008

Guma Glasses. Distorting Lens works well with a variety of cards, especially cards like Pyroblast (Destroy target blue permanent for one mana). This deck takes advantage of said card interaction while mixing it with a Cat tribal theme.  The ending result is a terribly fun deck to play.  Note that it includes Blistering Firecat, Anarchy and Guma!  You know you want to see the deck...

100% Relentless Rats Free.

Deck of the Day - Friday, May 2, 2008

100% Relentless Rats Free. As the title suggests, you won't find a sinlge Relentless Rat card in this decklist.  You will, however, find the evil combo fo Momir Vig & Thrumming Stone.  If you click the link you'll find everything you ever wanted to know about the combo and this deck.

Storming Arcanix.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, May 1, 2008

Storming Arcanix. Vexing Arcanix was one of those cards I was super excited about it being reprinted in Eighth Edition. This deck was most likely inspired by its reprinting. This is a mill deck by Mr. Alongi over at www.magicthegathering.com that involves both the Arcanix and Brain Freeze... and Millstone... and Vision Charm... and Whetstone... I love artifacts. And I certainly love Mill. If you do too, click on today's deck of the day.

Burning Hatred.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, April 30, 2008

Burning Hatred. This is one of the decks that was featured during Evil Combo Week last week.  If you checked out the content for that week stop by the forum thread and let us know what you thought.  If you missed out on Evil Combo Week, you can find all of the content here.  This deck is a mean deck using Burning Sands, as Cashew described here.  Enjoy!

UG Threshold 2008.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, April 29, 2008

UG Threshold 2008. This deck took Kacper Pękala to 7th Place @ Rzeszowie Extended in January 2008. (I only know that because I found this deck on deckcheck.net). So this is what UG Threshold looks like in Extended... It appears as nasty as it was when it was in Standard settings. Of course, what do I know about the current T2 or Extended formats? Nothing. I do know this is a fun deck to play and equally powerful in casual.

Alpha Bits.

Deck of the Day - Monday, April 28, 2008

Alpha Bits. If you are a fan of the UN sets like Unhinged and Unglues, you should enjoy today's deck. This uses ____________ in combination with other cards with uncommon letters of the alphabet in their name... to win the game with Now I Know My ABC's. Also included in the deck are Johnny, Combo Player and Richard Garfield, Ph.D. Have fun.

Eternal Slide.

Deck of the Day - Friday, April 25, 2008

Eternal Slide. This deck is straight from MDV's Historical Database of decks. If you see any 'historic' decks missing from this list, please let me know. This deck, played by Julien Nuijten, 2004 World Champion, combines Astral Slide with Eternal Witness which can keep recurring cycling cards or other cards like Plow Under for a lockdown strategy. Astral Slide is an evil card in general but with Eternal Witness, its just cruel.

Worldgorger Dragon Combo.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, April 24, 2008

Worldgorger Dragon Combo. Holy Power Nine!  This deck was obviously built with the Eternal formats in mind including the nasty infinite combo using Wolrdgorger Dragon and Animate Date.  The win conditions are all found in the sideboard and are fetched via a wish.  Check out the deck, figure out how it works and then try to build it.  Good luck getting the power cards. *grin*

Bucket of Blood.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, April 23, 2008

Bucket of Blood. I have to be honest here. This is a deck I actually have built and ready to play with real Magic: the Gathering cards. I don't know why I love this deck, but I do. The combo involving Wall of Blood and Grab the Reins is just evil. It comes out of nowhere and kills an opponent real fast. Not only is it evil, but its budget too! Check it out, build it, tweak it, make it your own and have fun playing the game we all love.

Channeled.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, April 22, 2008

Channeled. If you've been playing Magic since the beginning (or even shortly after the beginning) you will know what is in this deck.  If you don't, here it is: Channel, Fireball and Drain Life.  Channel plus either of the latter cards is fully capable of winning you the game.  Channel lets you pay life for mana.  Fireball or Drain Life will deal damage to your opponent.  With the help of a Birds of Paradise and a quick burn spell, this combo will win you the game.  Evil.  Totally Evil.  Its no wonder Channel is restricted and/or banned in tournament formats.

Scepter Chant 2006.

Deck of the Day - Monday, April 21, 2008

Scepter Chant 2006. Isochron Scepter and Orim's Chant is an evil combo that is capable of locking down your opponent's untap step and attack phase. The combo isn't too difficult to set up with cards like Thirst for Knowledge and Fact or Fiction. It isn't terribly difficult to protect either with cards like Counterspell, Fire/Ice and Spell Snare. Overall, this is a pretty evil deck with a very evil combo.

Pango Express

Deck of the Day - Friday, April 18, 2008

Pango Express, today's deck of the day, was one of the first decks added to the MDV Deck Database that the webmaster didn't build.  When MDV first started, more than 80% of the decks were all by the webmaster. This deck features Limited Resources with Pangosaur and was built quite some time ago.  Go ahead and update it yourself!

Entertaining Idiots.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, April 17, 2008

Entertaining Idiots. This deck was created by guest author Lord Sage of Ronevia in his article "How to Keep an Idiot Busy" article from June 2007. I would talk more about the deck but instead I will encourage you to read his article. It will be a lot more fulfilling that way. Enjoy! (Just click on the link and it will take you to the article).

Oppenheimer's Atlantis.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, April 16, 2008

Oppenheimer's Atlantis. This is an older Merfolk deck that doesn't use Stasis Orb or any of the Orb's lockdown ilk.  It does use an ingenious combo consisting of Booby Trap and Memory Lapse.  The combo combined with some efficient Merfolk drops, Intuition and Brainstorm makes for a pretty good deck.  Check it out.

Omnichord 2007.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, April 10, 2008

Omnichord 2007. If you participated in Standard last year you should recognize this deckname. Omnichord relies on Chord of Calling to pull out whatever creature would be needed for any given situation. This, of course, is after accelerating your mana supply with cards like Wall of Roots and Farseek. The deck also implements the "pickles" lock of Brine Elemental and Vesuvan Shapeshifter but doesn't absolutely depend on it for a win.

Mom's Zombie Deck.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, April 9, 2008

Mom's Zombie Deck. What on earth is a MOM'S Zombie Deck? If it was Mon's Zombie Deck, I would assume it was a goblin zombie deck. However, this is Mom's. Is it an old school zombie deck? Looks like you are just going to have to click on the link and find out!

Bob Visits Egypt.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, April 8, 2008

Bob Visits Egypt. When Dimir Cutpurse was first spoiled before Ravnica was released, everyone was like, OMG!!! And then it didn't make many appearances. I could be wrong on that. In any event, this deck combines some masters from the Kamigawa Block with Dimir Cutpurse and Writ of Passage from Ravnica in an attempt to make Dimir Cutpurse useful. Check it out; you might see something you like.

Obedience.

Deck of the Day - Monday, April 7, 2008

Obedience. Here's an old deck of mine featuring Helm of Obedience.  While the deck is completely creatureless, don't be surprised when I pull a creature out of your deck and put it into play.  That's the beauty of Helm of Obedience.  To compliment it there is a suite of mill cards, discard cards and creature removal spells.  Can this deck to improved?  Definitely.  That's why you need to check it out!

Fun With Faeries.

Deck of the Day - Friday, April 4, 2008

Fun With Faeries. Here's a fun Faerie deck I found in the MTGSalvation Forums shortly after the release of Lorwyn. Did you know that the Faeries of Lorwyn were the only race to have barely or not changed at all after the Aurora that brought the world to Shadowmoor? Just thought I'd ask. Many thanks to MTGS for their rumor mill and spoiler which fuels MDV's own VS Page during rumor season.

Wolfgang Deck.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, April 3, 2008

Wolfgang Deck. BEHOLD! It's the Wolfgang Deck! Actually, its a lockdown/prison style deck featuring none other than Pygmy Hippo!! ?? And Stasis. And Opposition. And Survival of the Fittest. Shall I go on?

A Pirates Life For Me.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, April 2, 2008

A Pirates Life For Me. While its name would insist a Pirate Tribal deck, it isn't. It's a well crafted pseudo-LD control deck utilizing quick land bounce like Hoodwink and Boomerang. Follow it up with the Rishadan Cutpurse and/or Footpad and then move in for the kill with Juggernaut. Note the two copies of Ankh of Mishra. If I were to play a fun control deck, I would play this one as its fun and mean all at the same time. I love blue Land Destruction. *evil grin*

Worst Deck Possible.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, April 1, 2008

Worst Deck Possible. And this, my friends, is the Worst Deck Possible.  It could be because today is April Fool's Day, or perhaps its because that's what Nate Heiss decided to name it.  In any event, this deck uses Shared Fate.  From here, you'll just have to click on the link and find out how he works with or around Shared Fate for a winning deck.

Minotaur.

Deck of the Day - Monday, March 31, 2008

Minotaur. This here deck is a tribal Minotaur deck.  Yeah, I know.  Big Surprise.  Anyway, it is a blue-red deck that includes a lot of Minotaurs, Didgeridoo and Quicksilver Dagger.  Could it be improved?  Most definitely.  And I anticipate you to be that person to improve upon this decklist and make it your own.

Counter Madness.

Deck of the Day - Friday, March 28, 2008

Counter Madness. This deck was originally found in Scrye Magazine. To quote the creator of the deck, "The object of this casual build is to put charge counters and token creatures on the table as fast as you can (without the use of Slivers, because it’s been done, done again, and done some more). Winning is a close second. It’s also a low-budget deck, so you can sink your cash into fancy tokens – like little wind-up robots..." Please enjoy!

Chamber of Madness.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, March 27, 2008

Chamber of Madness. Anyone remember the Magic website called Nexus Prime? Unfortunately, it is no longer in existence. Fortunately, I found this decklist on it before it closed. This is an ALT-WIN (Alternative Win Condition) deck using Test of Endurance with Animal Boneyard and Chamber of Manipulation. Unlike the other decks from this week, this deck doesn't use any cards with Madness.

Bazaar Madness.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, March 26, 2008

Bazaar Madness. While I'm not totally on top of the Eternal Formats and scenes, I believe this is a deck that was once popular. It may still be, but I don't know for sure. This is an example of combining the powerful madness mechanic from Odyssey with a land known of Bazaar of Baghdad. Being that it is an Eternal decklist, it is moxed out with the power nine... good for MWS play anyway... unless, of course, you are one of those lucky individuals who own the power nine already. I would assume the majority of those people live in southwest Virginia area.

It's Maddening.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, March 25, 2008

It's Maddening. This is a Pauper deck. If you don't know what a pauper deck is, know it is a deck of all common cards. This particular deck is one that DBB featured in his Pauper article series. It is a Time Spiral block constructed deck using cards like Gorgon Recluse, Strangling Soot, Lightning Axe and Gathan Raiders... all commons and actually pretty good together too!

Madness Control.

Deck of the Day - Monday, March 24, 2008

Madness Control. It's funny to see this decklist as its one I haven't seen since I originally created this website. I built the deck around the Madness mechanic in combination with Masticore. The rest of the deck is literally control in the form of Memory Lapse, Forbid, Force Spike and Counterspell. I do have to question my inclusion of Silver Wyvern...

Apple Jacks.

Deck of the Day - Friday, March 21, 2008

Apple Jacks. I'm not sure if this is an official deck name as I found in a forum and not on an official page of any site, however, this cereal deck is also a combo deck. It involves Verdant Succession, Elvish Soultiller and Caller of the Claw. Please click on the deck link to see the deck list.

Cocoa Pebbles.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, March 20, 2008

Cocoa Pebbles. Cocoa Pebbles is a version of Fruity Pebbles using the Enduring Renewal combo with Goblin Bombardment. The major difference between the two decks is Necropotence. Note the the description of this deck was quoted from www.phyrexia.com and the first paragraph of the description really talks about Wheaties.  Go, go cereal decks!

Trix 2001.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Trix. ...are for kids... Yet another combo deck named after a cereal - are you noticing a theme for this week? This deck involves Donate and Illusions of Grandeur. Play Illusions, gain 20 life. Then Donate it to your opponent. They will eventually not be able to pay the upkeep and lose 20 life. That's just mean.  The rest of the deck is counterspells and tutors.

Raisin Bran.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, March 18, 2008

Raisan Bran. To quote the creator of this deck, Alex Borteh, "The concept of this deck is simple. Aluren, Aluren, Aluren. Get out your Wall of Roots and Blossoms early, then cast a Man O' War... and then your Aluren. Cast the Cavern Harpy and go to town. Keep drawing card upon card and lay down card upon card and eventually attack with a hoard of creatures..." Actually, I'm not sure if that is by Alex Borteh as I don't have the website credited.  In any event, it's a great combo deck.

Fruity Pebbles (Budde).

Deck of the Day - Monday, March 17, 2008

Fruity Pebbles. This version of Fruity Pebbles, a term dubbed on decks using the Enduring Renewal - Goblin Bombardment combo, was played by Kai Budde at Pro Tour Chicago in 1999. It is one of the historical decks in the MDV deck database. To see more, please go here.  By the way, if anyone can find the sideboard from this decklist, please email me.

Uyo's Journey.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, March 13, 2008

Uyo's Journey. If the title doesn't give it away, Uyo, Silent Prophet is the main attraction in today's deck of the day. Some targets for her wonderful ability include Cunning Wish, Cunning Wish, Cunning Wish, Cunning Wish and a host of decent toolbox cards in your sidebox. Besides that, the deck uses a bit of permission (countermagic) and a playset of Birds of Paradise. Sounds fun, right?

Onward Pious Soldiers.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, March 12, 2008

Onward Pious Soldiers. In case I haven't mentioned it before, MDV has a LITE deck section that features decks that are light on your pocketbook. In other words, they don't cost a whole lot of money to put together, have mostly commons, some uncommons and few to none rares. This particular deck is influenced heavily by the Onslaught block and features Soldiers.

Recycled Zombies.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, March 11, 2008

Recycled Zombies. At the core of this deck is recursion in the form of Patriarch's Bidding. Read the Runes powers out a huge Patriarch's Bidding, provided you play it the turn before you play Bidding. Then you have a team of Zombies to back you up. Together with Noxious Ghoul, who is mean to have with Bidding, you have a decent tribal-recursion deck. Feel free to substitute some of your own Zombies to make it your own and have fun with it.

Our Town.

Deck of the Day - Monday, March 10, 2008

Our Town. Holy lack of cohesion!  Today's deck has lots of one of's folks, however, I think you will be amused to know it is a Tribal Townsfolk deck. I think that explains a lot.  Check it out, update it if you can and give it a try.  You might just like it and win some unique bonus points for using this tribe.

Of Insects and Elves.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, March, 5 2008

Of Insects and Elves. It's not too often you get a tribal deck that actually has two tribes that work really well together. There were Ogres and Demons from the Kamigawa block and then there are the strange tribal interactions of Lorwyn. This deck combines Elves and Insects! Surprise, right... Anyway, several of the elves in the deck are capable of generating Insect tokens. Combines with Kaysa and Slate of Ancestry... you have a mean beatdown tribal deck. Sure, it could use some improvement. Why don't you be that person?

Mooning You.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, March, 4 2008

Mooning You. Here's a deck that used the Mistform creatures to help power out an early Patron of the Moon (thus the title of the deck). I think this is one of those decks can can do nicely, or better really, with some of the Changelings from Lorwyn block. Check it out, try it out and let me know what you think.

Wacko Jacko.

Deck of the Day - Monday, March, 3 2008

Wacko Jacko. This deck name is certainly creative; if you haven't guess, this is a black and white deck... Anyway, this deck involves Wicked Akuba, Long Forgotten Gohei and several other cards from the Kamigawa block. I would encourage you to look at the decklist and at least read the opening paragraph about the title of the deck.  Note: This is a Tribal Spirit deck.

Ow About That.

Deck of the Day - Friday, February, 29 2008

Ow About That. To quote the deck's creator: "...finally, Opalescence finds a good home in a combo deck. With this combo on the table, the next player to be damaged by a creature will (barring something silly like Worship) lose the game. It doesn't matter if that player has a million life. In fact, it's better if that player has a million life. Feel free to spot your opponent a million life if he lets you go first..." For the record, the deck creator is Mark Gottlieb.

Down with Affinity.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, February, 28 2008

Down with Affinity. Here's a deck I originally found in Inquest Magazine (#107 to be specific). This deck tries to outwit Affinity decks with a card called Grim Reminder. If you don't remember Grim Reminder or gasp, affinity, I would highly encourage you to check this deck out. In other news, I miss Inquest Magazine.  NOTE that I pulled Issue #107 from my bookshelf and added the deck description for this deck; previously it was missing from the deck database.

Ad Nauseum V02.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, February, 27 2008

Ad Nauseum V02. It's a shame the original website this deck was found on no longer exists. It's actually an intricate little deck! Drop as many permanents as you can as early in the game, not forgetting to get Recycle and Anvil of Bogardan out early. Then, when your opponent is lacking either cards in hand or permanents in play, play Forbidden Ritual as the killing card. Sounds interesting, right? Do you even know what Forbidden Ritual does?  I know I had to look it up.

Haakon Y.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, February, 26 2008

Haakon Y. Oooh. Another infinite combo deck that has some fun with Changeling, Haakon and Basal Sliver. I'll let you figure out exactly how the combo works... or you could click on the link. There the deck description should spell things out for you. The win condition? Grapeshot. Maybe you don't need to click on the link...

Shadow Elves.

Deck of the Day - Monday, February, 25 2008

Shadow Elves. If you want to build a cheap Black-Green Tribal Elf deck, this deck is something you should look at. It uses some older Elf cards like Defiant Elf, Seeker of Skybreak and Dauthi Trapper. Wait, Dauthi Trapper isn't an Elf!? Hmm. Misery Charm, Duress, Unholy Strength... perhaps you should look at this deck. Oh, it's a LITE deck too! (Easy on the pocketbook).

Cauldron Combos.

Deck of the Day - Friday, February, 22 2008

Cauldron Combos. One thing I look for in deck construction is card choice. If a deck uses a card that you don't see too often, like Burgeoning or Lifegift, it has a good chance of being reviewed for deck database inclusion. This deck in particular was submitted in the MDV Forums and the minute I saw it I knew I wanted it in the deck database. You uses Burgeoning?!  You uses Storm Cauldron!?!

Necrotasia.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, February, 21 2008

Necrotasia. This is a recent deck database addition that I found over at Star City Games(SCG). There are a few places I consistently find good deck database material and the two top sites are SCG and MTG.COM. While I normally find SCG's decks in Abe Sargent's articles, Chris Romeo (who created this deck) and Bennie Smith are runner-ups. One of these days I should analyze the number of decks each deck creator has in the database… for now, enjoy the deck!

Swap Meet (2007).

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, February 20, 2008

Swap Meet (2007) Can you see this week's theme for Card of the Day? If not, here's a deck from the recent MDV Deck Database updates. Swap Meet is a theme deck that aims at swapping permanents with your opponent. Bronze Bombshell and Legerdemain should give you a good idea what to expect in this blue-red, fun deck.

Thallid Shooter.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, February, 19 2008

Thallid Shooter. Here's another recent additional to the MDV Deck Database. Made by our own Cashew it was designed to show his clan mates on Magic Online how a Thallid Deck can actually BEAT your opponent. Not lose to them... Chord of Calling, Squall Line, Dark Confidant and a host of great Thallids make this deck a killer.

Frankenfish.

Deck of the Day - Monday, February 18, 2008

Frankenfish. This recent addition to the MDV Deck Database is all about fish. Dandan, Hammerhead Shark, Giant Shark, Sea's Claim, Part Water. They are all there with some others like Crypic Commands.  Not only is this a tribal Fish deck, it is like an Under the Sea theme deck too!

Green Elements.

Deck of the Day - Friday, February 15, 2008

Green Elements. Much like the Blue Elements deck I featured earlier this week, this is an older deck that I made trying to use some of the best green Elementals at its time. Unfortunately for this deck there have been much better elementals since it was created. However, this is also a fortunate matter since you can now tweak this deck using some of the Elemental cards in YOUR collection. Go for it. Give it a try!

Blistering Elementals.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, February 14, 2008

Blistering Elementals. "Blistering Elementals is an aggressive deck build that utilizes cards such as Smokebraider, Rite of Flame, and Seething Song to produce a lot of mana to cast powerful and hastely elementals such as Skizzik, Blistering Firecat, or Hostility quickly to drop your oponents life points to zero as fast as possible, as is any aggro deck's point."  This intro to the deck was created by the deck creator, Jason.

K.G. Bird.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, February 13, 2008

K.G. Bird. Back when the Elemental tribe wasn't such an overcrowded mass, this deck was overjoyed to get Squall Drifter from Coldsnap. The deck uses white and/or blue elementals like Pride of the Clouds, Air Elemental, Celestial Ancient and Windweaver. Where it goes from there... you'll just have to find out for yourself.

Blue Elements.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, February 12, 2008

Blue Elements. WOW! This is an old deck. It was created long before the many elementals of Ravnica, Time Spiral and Ravnica. I'm sure this deck could use a dramatic update -- and you just might be the one to make that update. The original decklist, as shown in the link, was full of big fat blue elemental creatures in combination with Dream Halls for an easier way to cast them. Is this deck amazing? Probably not -- however, I think you can make it amazing.

Elemental Breakdance.

Deck of the Day - Monday, February 11, 2008

Elemental Breakdance. There was a time in the very beginning of Magic Deck Vortex when I hosted a deck clinic. Due to the overwhelming growth of the site from the start, this deck clinic was destined for failure because of the number of submissions I received. However, this is one of the decks that I fixed in the deck clinic. It is a mono-green deck using quick Elf mana acceleration coupled with big beats like Silvos and Thorn Elemental. How does this deck stand up now? Only you can make that call.

Dead Clone.

Deck of the Day - Friday, February 8, 2008

Dead Clone. Recursion is fun... Throwing some creatures into the graveyard and then casting Zombify on it makes big creatures look not so hard to cast. However, this deck doesn't use Zombify. Instead it uses Dawn of the Dead and Corpse Dance. And these two spells only bring the creature back for a turn. Why not exploit the for a turn and Clone the creature you just reanimated. When the one goes to the graveyard, Clone will stick around and be there for good.

Ideal Tokens.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, February 7, 2008

Ideal Tokens. This deck was originally submitted in the Casual Deck Forum found in the main MDV forums. It is an Enduring Ideal deck centered around lots of enchantments. It includes token generators like Squirrel Nest and Centaur Glade to stall your opponent until you eventually cast the Ideal. Then, as a finishing touch , you can cast Day of the Dragons for the win. Check it out, make it your own, and have fun playing Magic: the Gathering!

Tim Walk.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, February 6, 2008

Tim Walk. The creator of this deck decided his win condition was going to be Prodigal Sorcerer, notoriously known as Tim. The only problem was that his win condition needed 20 turns untouched to win you the game. No problem there, just combo Azusa, Lost but Seeking, Walk the Aeons and Crucible of Worlds to keep your turns consecutive (i.e. not let your opponent play his turns ever).  This way your Tim will be able to do his job.  Great Deck.  Just build it, play it once or twice and then dismantle it to keep your opponents from hating you forever.

Goon Squad.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, February 5, 2008

Goon Squad. As if Goblins weren't a powerful force already, this deck combines some powerful and synergistic goblins with Shock, Sulfuric Vortex and Clickslither. Talk about an aggressive clock. What goblins are in this deck? Well, you'll just have to clik on the link to see...

Needle Lift.

Deck of the Day - Monday, February 4, 2008

Needle Lift. To quote the deck creator's own deck description: "The deck strives to win either via decking or by attacking with man-lands across a (presumably) clear battlefield. The Needle-Vapors or Needle-Storm combo won't win the game on its own, it's disruptable, and (as demonstrated in this very deck) there are ways to attack with creatures anyway. But it should throw enough of a monkey wrench into your opponent's plans to let you take control of the game… or at least be very, very annoying."  This deck was created by mark Gottlieb over at www.wizards.com.

Ingrid's Angels.

Deck of the Day - Friday, February 1, 2008

Ingrid's Angels. Now this is an odd decks. It's a casual tribal deck using Angels, but it also has powerful cards like Mox Sapphire, Sol Ring, Mana Vault and Grim Monolith! I guess you have to have a lot of mana to play all of those big angel cards...

Nine Moon Gales.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, January 31, 2008

Nine Moon Gales. Intruder Alarm... if you see this in a deck you know the deck is going to be infinite on some level. And this deck is no different. Combine Keeper of the Nine Gales, Intruder Alarm, two other Birds, a mana-producting creature and a 1-mana creature... Finish off your opponent with an infinite damage Blaze or a Sharpshooter. Have fun!

Ripple Rats.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, January 30, 2008

Ripple Rats. If you actually own 22 Relentlass Rats, or you use Magic Workstation to play decks, this deck is for you! Combined with cards like Thrumming Stone, Relentless Rats, Sensei's Diving Top, Relentless Rats and Relentless Rats... this is a mean deck. I've played against a variant of this deck, and I've lost almost everytime. Where was Echoing Truth when I needed it???

Orcs Away.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, January 29, 2008

Orcs Away. Abe Sargent, this creator of this deck, references some casual combos from the Dark Age of Magic. Included in his list of old casual combos is Circle of Protection: Red and Orcish Artillery. Other cards in the deck include Orcish Cannoneers, Orcish Mechanics and a few creative artifacts. Orcs Away!!!

More Sources.

Deck of the Day - Monday, January 28, 2008

More Sources. Do any of your friends play land destruction decks too often or maybe just often enough for you to not want to play them anymore?  Well, don't give up hope.  This deck is an Anti-LD deck and thus packs cards that keep them from winning with their strategy.  Mana producing creatures, spells that search out lands for you every turn.  This is an older deck, but take the strategy and make it your own.

Searing Cache.

Deck of the Day - Friday, January 25, 2008

Searing Cache. This deck uses Mana Cache in combination with some red staples to burn your opponent to the ground. Cards like Shock Troops, Ancient Hydra, Seal of Fire, Cave-In and Searing Wind are all in there. But how does this deck play? You tell me. I was taking a second look at this and wondering if Mana Cache is even worth it in this deck.

DD18.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, January 24, 2008

DD18. Wow. This is a deck for blue and black mages. If you remember cards like Dralnu's Pet, Spinal Embrace, Lobotomy and Seer's Vision - and you like them -- you definitely like this deck. It's control oriented with a little Stratadon sprinkled in. Oh yes, and Draco too!

Nantooko!

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, January 23, 2008

Nantooko! There are deck building restraints like tournament types. There are deck building restraints like color. But have you ever tried to build a deck using all cards illustrated by the same artist? It's a challenge, but this deck works well. All of its nonland cards are illustrated by Rebecca Guay!

Endless Browbeating.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, January 22, 2008

Endless Browbeating. I'm sure everyone is familiar with Spellweaver Helix. If you not, check out this deck. It's an interesting take on Spellweaver Helix using cards that are GROUP game friendly. Syphon Soul, Sizzle and Barter in Blood are all multiplayer cards and the Helix lets you get the most out of them. The only creature in the deck is Anarchist. I know you want to check it out. So do it!

Enduring Plans.

Deck of the Day - Monday, January 21, 2008

Enduring Plans. To Infinite and Beyond! This deck uses Enduring Renewal and Wild Cantor to go infinite - infinite storm count anyway. Follow up with a Grapeshot and win the game. There's a variety of other cards in the deck including Wrath of God, Hatching Plans, Ronom Unicorn, etc. Check it out. Make it your own and have fun, assuming you like infinite combos. But beware, infinite combos played too often can break up play groups and lose friends.

Keep the Dead Buried.

Deck of the Day - Friday, January 18, 2008

Keep the Dead Buried. Are recursion decks running amuck in your local metagame? If so, you might want to try this deck out against them. Loaded with anti-recursion tactics, this deck is sure to foil their plans. Cards like the Carrion creatures from Torment, Duress and Planar Void will keep their graveyard empty and fast. Curious?

I Spy.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, January 17, 2008

I Spy. This is actually an Auction of the People deck, but unfortunately I didn't record which year it was from. The year was for theme decks, I believe. This particular deck revolves around SPIES. Cards like Eye Spy, Wu Spy, Stromgald Spy, Orcish Spy... the list goes on. Check it out, see if you can make any modifications and have fun!

Rift-off.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, January 16, 2008

Rift-off. This deck packs 32 lands, no creatures and the rest spells. The trick? Fluctuator, lots of cycling cards and Lighting Rift. Check it out!

Tribal Twister.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday, January 15, 2008

Tribal Twister. As the name would suggest, there is a card in the deck that is a twister. Which one? I'll give you a hint: it's a mono-green deck. The tribe? Elves. I'll let you click on the link to see the deck. Although I bet you have the deck's tribe and twister card all figured out.

Strike Force.

Deck of the Day - Monday, January 14, 2008

Strike Force. Did you know there are only ten mon-green soldier cards in Magic, pre-Morningtide? Well, there are. Not that means anything for this deck. However, it is a soldier theme (tribal) deck using both white and green soldiers. Although, I haven't checked to see if the great big Oracle Update of Lorwyn changed any of their creature types. I probably should...

Thallid Haze.

Deck of the Day - Friday,  January 11, 2008

Thallid Haze. I like Thallids. I like Saproling tokens. I also like twice as many Saproling Tokens which works when you combine Thallids with Paradox Haze. If you want to see how this concept panned out, check out this deck.

Izzet Dead Yet.

Deck of the Day - Thursday,  January 10, 2008

Izzet Dead Yet. Lava Spike, Glacial Ray, Reach Through Mists, Char... Wee Dragonauts, Izzet Guildmage... Need I go on? This is obviously a blue-red burn combo-style deck. In fact, its an infinite deck. If you want to know how it is an infinite deck, just click on the link.

Big Impin'.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday,  January 9, 2008

Big Impin'. What a deck name. Have I ever mentioned I loved deck names? This is one of my favorites. In the meantime, if you couldn't tell, it's a tribal deck revolving around Imps. Including just one copy of Chimney Imp, it backs powerful imps like Foul Imp, Stinkweed Imp and Putrid Imp. For some synergy, there are also dredge cards like Shambling Shell and Moldervine Cloak. Interested? Check it out.

Ability Capability.

Deck of the Day - Tuesday,  January 8, 2008

Ability Capability. If you liked Quicksilver Elemental and its ability to borrow activated abilities of other creatures in play, you'll love this deck.  And you'll love the fact that I updated it with the deck description as originally written by Mark Gottlieb (aka MaGo) over at www.wizards.com.  Note his closing statement on the deck -- its one of my favorite as it embodies many of the decks in the MDV deck database.

Heartier Green.

Deck of the Day - Monday, January 7, 2008

Heartier Green. Wow. This is an older deck in the database. Remember Defense of the Heart? How's about the Harvest Wurm - Rogue Elephant synergy/combo? This deck has all of that. It could also use some work. I would encourage you to check it out, tune it up and go with it. That's what MDV's deck database is all about.

Questing.

Deck of the Day - Friday, January 4, 2008

Questing. Ah! A Domain Deck. This particular deck uses Draco and Questing Phelddagrif as a win condition. Typical Domain decks run cards like Harrow, Global Ruin, Collective Restraint and Allied Strategies and this deck is no different. Don't know what domain decks are? A quick summary: They are five color decks that take advantage of the five-basic-land-cards-matter cards from the Invasion block.

Untap Dance.

Deck of the Day - Thursday, January 3, 2008

Untap Dance. To quote the deck's creator, Anthony Alongi: [This] deck blends a few boutique artifacts with some older cards, and is set up to withstand a bit more artifact hate. It does this by de-emphasizing artifacts a bit, and coming up with at least one lovely rare to pull them back from the dead. Veteran players may be better able to handle the deck's timing tricks. They're also more likely to be up to the challenge of the Jangling Automaton - Copperhoof Vorrac combo.

Scryb and Force 2006.

Deck of the Day - Wednesday, January 2, 2008

Scryb and Force 2006. As if blue-green madness wasn't good enough for this color pair, in 2006 Scryb & Force showed blue-green as a powerhouse again - only this time minus the Madness and cards like Wonder. Using powerful cards like Scryb Ranger, Call of the Herd, Psionic Blast and Spectral Force, this deck provided control and beats. I'm sure the deck would fair well at your local play group too.
