March Deckbuilding Contest: In Ruins...!
3/16/10 - Objective: Design a 60 card, no sideboard, deck centered around 4 copies of Ruin Ghost. The deck type doesn't matter. What matters is that you make this the coolest deck possible while following the rules of the contest. Think originality, cool combos, casual perspective. Alternative formats are OK. No sideboards.

Deadline: Your deck must be posted in this thread with all of the requirements filled by the end of the day on 3/31/10(that's a Wednesday). You may edit your entry up until that point. ~Streetz~  Enter here.  Discuss here.
Feb's "Bazaar Trading 101" results are in!  Congrats to...
3/14/10 - This was by far one of the most fun contests for me to grade.  Many of the almost twenty entries were chock full of good card choices, great ideas and fun synergies.  The winner of the contest is Harizl with his deck, "My Pet Monster."  Here's the decklist:

Did it win because I have an love for land desctruction decks?  Or did it win because its full of combos and two excellent trader fodder cards: Rust Elemental and Primordial Ooze?  You decide that.  In the meantime, the scores can be found here.  The original deck submissions can be found here.  Some of the decks will be added to the MDV Deck Database.  Thank you to everyone that participated in the contest.  March's Deckbuilding contest can be found here. ~Streetz~  Discuss here.

February 2010 Deckbuilding Contest: Deadline is 2/26/10.
2/19/10 - The deadline for the deckbuilding contest this month, Bazaar Trading 101, is quickly approaching.  Be sure and get your deck submission in by 2/26/10 in order to qualify for the contest.  Note that the deck and card tags are temporarily turned off until I can find a version that is compatible with vBulletin Publishing Suite (which the MDV Forums are now using).  Best of luck to you all! ~Streetz~  Enter here.  Discuss here.
Feb'2010 MCC: Deadline is 2/22/10!
2/19/10 - This is a gentle reminder that the deadline for February's Monthly Card Contest is 2/22/10. That's only a few days away so be sure and get your entry in ASAP!  You don't have to wait to be approved anymore to join the forum so you can sign up, get the email, click the link, and go post your submission.  Links to the discussion and submission threads are below.  Have fun and good luck! ~Streetz~ Enter here.  Discuss here.
February 2010 Deckbuilding Contest: Bazaar Trading 101.
2/7/10 - As an introduction into becoming the best Bazaar Trader ever, I will start your schooling by giving you a few examples of some cards you might want to give your opponent. Remember that you can donate an artifact, a creature or a land you control. Notice that this effect "targets" so don't try to donate one of your shrouded permanents. Does anyone else find it strange that Trading doesn't involve Trading at all? Bazaar Trading should really be called Bazaar Giving. However, I digress...

Objective: Design a 60 card, no sideboard, deck centered around 4 copies of Bazaar Trader. The deck type doesn't matter. What matters is that you make this the coolest deck possible while following the rules of the contest. Think originality, cool combos, casual perspective. Alternative formats are OK. No sideboards.  Deadline: Your deck must be posted in this thread with all of the requirements filled by the end of the day on 2/26/10(that's a Friday). You may edit your entry up until that point. ~Streetz~  Enter here.  Discuss here.
Deck of the Day 2009 Archives Posted.
2/6/10 - This isn't big news or anything...  Just letting you all know the 2009 Deck of the Day Archive has been created.  You can check it out by clicking the above link.  ~Streetz~  P.S. This is also a new deck of the day today (Saturday).  Check it out!
Let's Go Dancing Deckbuilding Contest Results!
2/4/10 - George G has delivered quickly again with the results for January's deckbuilding contest: Let's Go Dancing!  Please click the link above.  In the meantime, you can check out the decks or discuss the results and contest by clicking on the links at the end of this blurb.  While you are there be sure and congratulate George G who is expecting twins!  ~Streetz~   Check out decks here.  Discuss here.
Feb'2010 MCC: Short messages, small month...
1/31/09 - Welcome to MDV's February 2010 MCC contest. In this Saint Vincent Valentine's month, as it is known, it is customarily of loving couples to send short messages to each other, professing or reinforcing their love. It is also customarily of single people to... hum... *sigh* Well, nevermind about what single people do. The important detail to retain here is that February is the smallest month of the year. Realize where I'm getting at by now? Short messages, small month? No? Ack, screw it: Create a non-wordy card.

In other words, create a card with three or less lines of text in its text box. In other words still, create a card Frazzled Editor does not have protection from. Remember that flavor text and reminder text do not count towards a card's wordiness (at least not according to the Unhinged FAQTIWDAWCC, which I will use as reference to relieve all liability on the matter off of me). Also, I will allow some measure of leeway over font sizes, for those who wish to squeeze a few extra words onto their cards. But as soon as the readability of your card becomes compromised, you can be sure points will be deducted. ~YWN~ Enter here.  Discuss here.
A Short Story Contest: The Entries!
1/23/10 - To ease the reading of these stories I decided to create a summary-thread. I would suggest you to comment and give each other feedback (I assume it would be appreciated.)

A few notes: I (Yawgmoth) and Lymons will judge this contest and I think that ideally we should be able to announce a winner and publish the Planeswalker-prize-art-thingy (in hindsight it might not have been the best thing to do as I now have some sort of stage fright/performance anxiety)during the first week of February.

And I might find it necessary to send out a PM (to all contestants) asking for more in-depth/detailed descriptions of your planeswalker(s) - you could also send that description to me now so that I do not need to send PMs to everyone once we have decided a winner.

Oh, and a last thing before the entries: Was this a... "fun" contest? Would you like another one when this one is over? And if you weren't able to finish your story in time - would you like a second chance in a second contest? ~Yawgmoth~ Discuss here.

January 2010 Deckbuilding Contest: Let's Go Dancing!
1/19/10 - You will be designing your deck around a former MCC contest winner.  Namely October 2009's "Gravedancer" card by GG Crono.  You can find more information out by clicking the link. Deadline is 1/31/10. ~George G~  Enter here.  Discuss here.

Note: The winner's from last month's deckbuilding contest (3 Card Monte) can be found here.  Many thanks for the quick judging by George!

December Deckbuilding Contest: 3 Card Monte.  Deadline is 1/3/10.
12/28/09 - This month you will have three options in which to channel your creativity!  You will need to build a 60 card deck (sideboard optional), using four copies of any one of three cards: Lurking Predators, Homarid Spawning Bed or Ward of Bones.  Full details can be found by clicking the link. ~George G~ Editor's Note: My apologies on not posting this earlier in the month.  I have faith in you that you still have enough time to enter the contest!  Who knows... you might win!!! ~Streetz~ Enter here.  Discuss here.
A Short Story Contest!
12/28/09 - This is a short story contest for this holiday-season, there is no set deadline as of yet. But I was preliminary thinking that the deadline for sending in stories should be shortly after new year. Then there will be a short judging and I will announce a winner.

To make things easier, and to give this some relation to Magic: the Gathering - I thought that I would dictate one rule: The story has to include at least one (1) planeswalker (could be the protagonist, the antagonist or whoever) and that he/she/it planeswalks at least once. This planeswalking-sequence should be a little more descriptive than something like: "then he planeswalked to Ravnica. There he-..." I am looking for something that describes the process from some perspective.

As for some potential reward for winning the contest, I will draw and ink the planeswalker(s) of the winning story. It is not much, but it is about the only thing I can actually give. I was also hoping that we could perhaps convince Streetz to post it on the mainsite.

Oh, and one last thing: I could need a co-judge, someone impartial (not from the Order) who could balance the judging of this contest. (I need contestants more than judges though.) ~Yawgmoth~ Discuss and Sign Up Here.
MCC Visual Spoiler Updated (Finally!) and the new MCC Contest.
12/14/09 - The visual spoiler for the Monthly Card Contest winners has finally been updated with November's winning entry.  December's contest is still in progress; the deadline is 12/22/09 so you still have some time to enter.  This month's directive is "create a heat-related card."  Simple enough, right?  ~Streetz~ Enter here.  Discuss here. P.S. Many thanks to YWN for hosting this contest.
Update on Worldslaying 102 Deckbuilding Contest.
12/3/09 - I apologize for the lack of updates recently.  In the meantime, I plan on picking things back up.  First off, Shaitan666 has agreed to help me out and judge this contest.  Also, I will be posting a December deckbuilding contest this week in which I will take on a guest judge or two to help me out with.  Thank you for visiting Magic Deck Vortex!  Don't worry, many more updates to come!   ~John Streetz~ Discuss here.

Oct2009 MCC: Deadline for Spooky Spooky is today 10/26/09!
10/26/09 - YWN is judging the Monthly Card Contest for October now and he was generous enough to give everyone some extra time to submit or perfect their entry.  However, that extra time is almost up.  Your entries are due by the end of the day on Monday 10/26/09.  I wish you all luck! ~Streetz~  [Submission Thread] [Discussion Thread]
Deckbuilding Contest: Worldslaying 102!
10/19/09 - I will recap some of the things from Worldslaying 101, but in the meantime, welcome to Worldslaying 102! Here you will be using the knowledge you learned in 101 to build a unique and powerfully fun deck centered around one card: Worldslayer. This Mirrodin rare is capable of making everything GO BOOM! You must include four copies of the card in your deck, your deck must be 60 cards, have two different legendary cards and it must be submitted with a deck name and brief deck description. Understood?! You have until 11/9 to submit your entry! Good luck! ~Streetz~ Enter here.  Discuss here.
How Deep Is The Ocean DbC Results Posted!
10/18/09 - The "How Deep Is The Ocean" contest was loads of fun with 26 entries and a wide array of deck types... everything from Mill to SCS to CONTROL to COMBO to THEME decks.  There was even a Land Destruction decklist in there!!  There were some strong decks and then there were some uber-flavorful decks.  Which deck won the contest?  Looks like you'll just have to click on the link to see who scored the highest.  Thank you to everyone who participated in the contest. Another Deckbuilding Contest (DbC) will be posted soon!  Thank you for visiting Magic Deck Vortex! Oct2009 MCC: Reminder for Spooky Spooky!
10/15/09 - Just a quick reminder that the deadline for this month's card creation contest is 10/20/09.  That's next Tuesday.  If you haven't already, make sure your entry is posted and/or finalized.  Also, know there has been a slight change of plans: Your Worst Nightmare (YWN) will be judging this instead of me (Streetz).  Good luck to everyone!  ~Streetz~  [Submission Thread] [Discussion Thread]
Oct2009 MCC: Spooky Spooky Monthly Card Contest!
10/1/09 - While TH and the judges figure out scores and tally them up for the August/September MCC contest, I figured I would post the next monthly card contest! This is a first for me! I opted for something simple and in spirit of the major 'holiday' for the month of October: Halloween. And I won't lie -- this is as ordinary or as complex as you want to make it. There's just one major rule: make it HALLOWEEN-ESQUE!!!!

This month, players are to design a card of any type and color. However, their card must be Halloween themed (aka Haloween-esque). You can make this as simple or as complex as you want. However, know your art selection and card name are crucial. That's all I'll say at this time.  Deadline is 10/20/09.  Good luck! ~Streetz~  [Submission Thread] [Discussion Thread]
Video Contest:  Congratulations Alaxam!
9/24/09 - Congratulations Alaxam for winning first place in the Video Contest from last month.  Alaxam will be awarded a $50.00 credit to MTGFanatic for his entry.  You can see his video here on YouTube.  His winning video will be featured on the MDV YouTube page, found here, for several weeks.  You can also see the runner up video by CopySix here on YouTube.  Thank you to everyone that submitted an entry for this contest!  Thank you for visiting Magic Deck Vortex! ~Streetz~ [Discussion Thread]
How Deep Is The Ocean Deckbuilding Contest!
9/9/09 - I was listening to one of my favorite barbershop songs recently and thought to myself, why isn’t there a deck in the MDV deck database with that title? And thus is the point of this contest. Design and build a deck intended to be named “How Deep is the Ocean?” Interesting? I think so. You could go with the ‘fish’ theme or go another direction relying heavily on blue mana or enchantments involving water, the ocean or deep-ness. How you build this deck is completely up to you. Think outside of the box! And Good luck! ~Streetz~ Enter Here.  Discuss here.

Monthly Card Contest: Lucky Number Seven!
8/2/09 -  August is MDV’s 7th birthday!!! In light of that, we’re going to be celebrating it this month. This round is going to be a bit more straight-forward than most of the others, but hey that’s good too!  This month, players are to design a card of any type and color. However, their card must contain at least some form of the number seven in any part of the card aside from the flavor text. (The flavor text can have it too, but I want it to be on the actual card as well).  Enter the contest today!  Read more here! ~ThunderHog~ [Submission Thread] [Discussion Thread]
He's Almost Triskelion Deckbuilding Contest Scores Posted!
8/2/09 - Several hours later, I have finished reviewing all of the decks. Overall I am really happy about the turn out for this contest with 28 entries (several more than last month) and a lot of solidly built decks. There was a nice selection of decks including Combo, Beatdown, Tribal, Mill and even a Theme deck (which I'm a sucker for).

One thing that I don't care for in these contests but that showed up several times is 'infinite combo' syndrome. Does an infinite combo make the deck any more fun to play against? Does it make it any better? Not in my eyes. Unless, of course, you use a unique combo I've never seem before and the rest of the deck does well without the infinite combo.

Keep reading to see the scores as well as the top five deck lists! Thank you to everyone who participated.  The next contest will be posted very soon.  ~Streetz~ View entries here  Discuss contest scores here.

MDV Deckbuilding Contest: Deadline to submit is today!
7/31/09 - The deadline for July's Deckbuilding Contest, He's Almost Triskelion, is today.  If you haven't posted your decklist yet, please do so.  No further modifications are aloud after today as well, so if you have a last minute change to make, make it before midnight tonight.  Good luck to all those that took the challenge and entered a deck list!  You should too! ~Streetz~ Enter here.  Discuss here.
MDV Deckbuilding Contest: He's Almost Triskelion... - Deadline is 7/31/09.
7/16/09 - He's close but no cigar...  The objective of this contest is to design a 60 card, no sideboard, deck using four copies of Deathbringer Thoctar. The deck type doesn't matter. What matters is that you make this the coolest deck possible while following the rules of the contest. Whether its originality or combos or whatever. Note: The winner of the contest will receive four copies of Deathbringer Thoctar.

If you didn't check out the deck from last month's contest, I would highly encourage you to do so.  Check out the other blurb on the main page about the winner from Be Resourceful, last month's deckbuilding contest.  Four Limited Resources will be mailed to the winner of that contest much like four copies of Deathbringer Thoctar will be mailed to the winner of this contest.

Good luck!  Be sure and read the rules.  If you haven't signed up for the forum, now is a great time to do it. ~Streetz~ Enter here.  Discuss here.

Monthly Card Contest: Keyword Extravaganza!
6/10/09 -  Keywords have played a huge part in building the foundations of Magic as a game. Keywords have existed ever since the beginning and have only become more prominent ever since. As such, I’ve decided to name this round Keyword Extravaganza!

In this round, participants can design any card they like. However, that card must have at least three seperate keywords on it. (If you have any questions about a specific keyword, don’t just up and use it. Feel free to ask me via PM is I will count it or not.) Note: Your keywords don't have to actually affect the card itself. An instant that says, "Target creature gains haste, trample and flying until end of turn." will count as having three keywords on it.

Enter the contest today!  Read more here! ~ThunderHog~ [Submission Thread] [Discussion Thread]
Did you know MDV has a fictional set of Cards called Celixia?
5/27/09 - Celixia is a set I created several years ago around when MDV was getting popular.  It's been quite a while since I featured it but its for that reason you are seeing this on the main page today.  Looking back, it wasn't a perfect fictional set by any means, but I still am happy with how it turned out.  Many members of the MDV community helped to make this set what you see.  We ever played a few games and held a tournament using it.

Check out the cards and then feel free to discuss it here.  Don't worry -- more site updates are coming very soon.  I just need to juggle a few things in the meantime.  ~Streetz~ Discuss Here.

MDV IDOL 4 News: Vote for the Winning Set of Cards!

*lifts his watch to his ear and listens for a moment*

Sarpadian Empires Contest: Results!
6/1/08 - Results are now posted; get ready to get mad. Well at least some of you. I got very anal, and very technical when comparing my cards. Deckbuilding Contest: Class-Wars!
1/25/08 - About two years ago Streetz ran a class-based contest designed to use a limited pool of Tribal based around the D&D style classes. I speak of this only because Morningtide brings us to an interesting crossroad; while it focuses heavily on the tribal lines created by Lorwyn, it also is the first set to really ever focus on the class aspect of creatures. As a result you're seeing numerous Faerie Rogues, Goblin Warriors, and others all designed along the tribal lines created by Lorwyn and the class lines being defined in Morningtide. Which brings me to the contest... ~Cashew~ Enter Here.
