MDV Featured Article - First Impressions: Eventide - White & Blue - Perspective #2. - by AlasterEisaroh - posted 8/7/08 - discuss here

Warning: The opinions expressed in the following are those of the Author, and do not express Magic Deck Vortex in anyway.

Here it is, the last set in the Lorwyn/Shadowmoor block, Eventide. What new cards has Eventide brought us? Well I'm going to look at them in what I like to call.

EDITOR'S NOTE: Alaster, a member of the Forum [Wizards] clan, is a guest writer and he is covering the same topic (colors really) that Streetz did last week during the unofficial Eventide First Impressions Theme Week on MDV.  Let Alaster know how you like his writing.  Let him know how you feel overall about the writing.   ~Streetz~

Eventide: White (A Johnny's View on Eventide)

Archon of Justice 3WW
Creature - Archon (Rare)
Flying
When Archon of Justice is put into a graveyard from play, remove target permanent from the game.
4/4

First off the bat we have Archon of Justice. First of all its a 4/4 Flier for 3WW which isn't bad, but then you see it's effect. "When Archon of Justice is put into a graveyard from play, remove target permanent from the game." That's nice, it gets rid of those pesky Persists creatures, and Planeswalkers.

I can also see this working well with cards that copy creature. Yes I'm looking at you Kiki-Jiki.

Archon of Justice sneezes at these two cards...

Grade: A

Ballynock Trapper 3W
Creature - Kithkin Soldier (Common)
Tap: Tap target creature.
Whenever you play a white spell, you may untap Ballynock Trapper.
2/2

I don't really see much that I can do with this card, I mean it is a cute little Limited trick, but other than that using this card in some kind of strategy seems like a lot of work.

Grade: C

Cenn's Enlistment 3W
Sorcery (Common)
Put two 1/1 white Kithkin Soldier creature tokens into play.
Retrace

When I saw this card I thought of Raise the Alarm, but you can replay it as long as you discard a land each time you play it from your graveyard. At 3W it's no Raise the Alarm, and heck it's a sorcery.

Grade: C

Endless Horizons 3W
Enchantment (Rare)
When Endless Horizons comes into play, search your library for any number of Plains cards and remove them from the game. Then shuffle your library.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may put a card you own removed from the game with Endless Horizons into your hand.

Wow! This card is nice. For 3W it thins your deck, makes sure you always have a land each turn, and increases your chance of draw that game breaker spell. What it only works with Plains, and if its destroyed you lose all the Plains you removed with it, hmm still good *Cough*Goblin Charbelcher*Cough*.

Grade: A

Endure 3WW
Instant (Uncommon)
Prevent all damage that would be dealt to you and permanents you control this turn.

This protects Planeswalker, Creatures, and you. At 3WW I'll pass thanks, maybe if it was 1 less it could be usable.

Grade: D

Flickerwisp 1WW
Creature - Elemental (Uncommon)
Flying
When Flickerwisp comes into play, remove another target permanent from the game. Return that card to play under its owner's control at the end of turn.
Its wings disturb more than air.
3/1

Hey cool Flicker on a creature Awesome, wait a minute! Wheres it's Flash am I reading this right? What the heck this card needs flash. Oh well there goes over half its usefulness.

Grade: C Yes I know Flicker is a Sorcery, but come on you now you want this to have Flash.

Hallowed Burial 3WW
Sorcery (Rare)
Put all creatures on the bottom of their owners' libraries.

Take that Token Decks!

Grade: A

Kithkin Spellduster 4W
Creature - Kithkin Wizard (Common)
Flying
1W, Sacrifice Kithkin Spellduster: Destroy target enchantment.
Persist
2/3

You pay 4W for this? It's kind of narrow of you ask me.

Grade: D Limited at best.

Kithkin Zealot 1W
Creature - Kithkin Cleric (Common)
When Kithkin Zealot comes into play, you gain 1 life for each black and/or red permanent target opponent controls.
1/3

Nice cost, nice effect, but still limited. Oh well another card that works with Painter's Servant.

Grade: B It's a pretty good common not great, but not bad either.

Light from Within 2WW
Enchantment (Rare)
Chroma- Each creature you control gets +1/+1 for each white mana symbol in its mana cost.

What the *beep*. This thing is crazy! +1/+1 for each white mana symbol in its mana cost, wow I can have a 10/10 Oversoul of Dusk Awesome.

Grade: A White Aggro just got a new friend.

Loyal Gryfalcon 3W
Creature - Bird (Uncommon)
Defender, flying
Whenever you play a white spell, Loyal Gyrfalcon loses defender until end of turn.
3/3

Lose defender by playing a White spell, hmm I guess that's worth it right?

Grade: B

Recumbent Bliss 2W
Enchantment - Aura (Common)
Enchant creature
Enchanted creature can't attack or block.
At the beginning of your upkeep, you may gain 1 life.

Its isn't Prison Term, but in limited it would still be nice to get some extra life each turn.

Grade: B

Spirit of the Hearth 4WW
Creature - Cat Spirit (Rare)
Flying
You can't be the target of spells or abilities your opponents control.
4/5

A flying Cat! Ok, well this is a pretty good card, you get a one sided Shroud, and a 4/5 flying beat for 4WW I guess that's worth it.

Grade: A Why does it have Flying?

Springjack Shepherd 3W
Creature - Kithkin Wizard (Uncommon)
Chroma - When Springjack Shepherd comes into play, put a 0/1 white Goat creature into play for each white mana symbol in the mana costs of permanents you control.
1/2

YES! Goat tokens. I don't really care that its a 1/2 for 3W, all I care about is how many Goats I can make with this.

Grade: A Come on you know you love this card too.

Suture Spirit 1W
Creature - Spirit (Uncommon)
Flying
(W/B)(W/B)(W/B): Regenerate target creature.
1/1

Interesting creature with an overpriced effect. That is a lot of mana to pay to regenerate a creature.

Grade: C

Now that we have looked through White, what do you say we take a look at Blue?

Crowd: Boo!

Ok I guess you guys don't want to know my opinion on Blue.

Crowd: Yep. Now get out of here.

Well too bad I'm going to tell you anyway.

Crowd: Somebody get the flamethrower.

Uh yeah, lets get started..

Eventide: Blue

Banishing Knack U
Instant (Common)
Until end of turn, target creature gains "Tap: Return target nonland permanent to its owner's hand."

This card was tailor made for all of those untap creatures in Shadowmoor. You could even play it with a Horseshoe Crab.

Grade: A This is a great Common

Cache Raiders 3UU
Creature - Merfolk Rogue (Uncommon)
At the beginning of your upkeep, return a permanent you control to its owner's hand.
4/4

A permanent I control, hmm a 4/4 for 3UU but I have to return a permanent every turn. I'd rather play Vizzerdrix that's right I said it. Vizzerdrix!

Grade: D

Dream Fracture 1UU
Instant (Uncommon)
Counter target spell. Its controller draws a card.
Draw a card.

Does anyone remember Arcane Denial? Well if you do you know that at first glance this is better than it. Now think outside the box. Having trouble I know I get that sometimes too. Use it on your own spell that is getting countered, and net your self two cards.

Grade: B

Dream Thief 2U
Creature - Faerie Rogue (Common)
Flying
When Dream Thief comes into play, draw a card if you played another blue spell this turn.
2/1

Oh look at this, what the heck, you mean I have to pay at least 2UU to draw a card, well I guess I get a 2/1 Flyer out of it, but still 2UU to draw a card.

Grade: c

Glamerdye 1U
Instant (Rare)
Change the text of target spell or permanent by replacing all instances of one color word with another.
Retrace (You may play this card from your graveyard by discarding a land card in addition to paying its other costs.)

Sleight of Mind what are you doing? Ok if Sleight of Mind was used (I sure it is to some extent) this Trumps it. sure it costs one more to play, but you can replay it over and over again (At the cost of a land each time).

Grade: C Not really that useful.

Glen Elendra Archmage 3U
Creature - Faerie Wizard (Rare)
Flying
U, Sacrifice Glen Elendra Archmage: Counter target noncreature spell.
Persist (When this creature is put into a graveyard from play, if it had no -1/-1 counters on it, return it to play under its owner's control with a -1/-1 counter on it.)
2/2

Now this is a card. U to counter any non-creature card. That's a great deal, but what makes it better is that you can do it twice because of Persist. Although one stop at only twice When you can just use Sage of Fables or Juniper Order Ranger for some real fun.

Grade: A

Idle Thoughts 3U
Enchantment (Uncommon)
2: Draw a card if you have no cards in hand.

Another really narrow card, but I guess it has its uses.

Grade: C

Indigo Faerie 1U
Creature - Faerie Wizard
Flying
U: Target permanent becomes blue in addition to its other colors until end of turn.
1/1

Another really narrow card, the only decent thing about this card is the fact it is a 1/1 flier for 1U, other then that its not really that great.

Grade: D

Inundate 3UUU
Sorcery (Rare)
Return all nonblue creatures to their owners' hands.

This is pretty good. Blue doesn't get game-breaking cards like this that often, yes it is a little expensive, but for an effect like that I think 3UUU is worth it.

Grade: A

Merrow Levitator 3U
Creature - Merfolk Wizard (Common)
Tap: Target creature gains flying until end of turn.
Whenever you play a blue spell, you may untap Merrow Levitator.
2/3

See Ballynock Trapper.

Grade: C

Oona's Grace 2U
Instant (Common)
Target player draws a card.
Retrace

Instant speed card draw! Retrace! Draw a card at the cost of a land. It's risky, but sometimes its worth the risk.

Grade: B

Razorfin Abolisher 2U
Creature - Merfolk Wizard (Uncommon)
1U, Tap: Return target creature with a counter on it to its owner's hand.
2/2

This is pretty good considering all the counters around right now. What where you expecting my to bad mouth it. Whoa ok put down the flamethrower.

Grade: B

Sanity Grinding
Sorcery (Rare)
Chroma - Reveal the top ten cards of your library. For each blue mana symbol in the mana costs of the revealed cards, target opponent puts the top card of his or her library into his or her graveyard. Then put the cards you revealed this way on the bottom of your library in any order.

Wow this is awesome, yes it costs UUU, but in a Mono Blue deck that is easy to get (Putting this in any other deck would be pointless.)

Grade: A

Talonrend 4U
Creature - Elemental (Uncommon)
Flying
(U/R): Talonrend gets +1/-1 until end of turn.

4U for a 0/5 flier that need you to pay to pump it for attacking. Oh well i guess there is always Doran.

Grade: D

Wake Thrasher 2U
Creature - Merfolk Soldier (Rare)
Whenever a permanent you control becomes untapped, Wake Thrasher gets +1/+1 until end of turn.
1/1

Hey look we got a creature to work with the Banishing Knack Horseshoe Crab Combo.

Grade: A It's a simple card that works well with untapping.

Wilderness Hypnotist 2UU
Creature - Merfolk Wizard (Common)
Tap: Target red or green creature gets -2/-0 until end of turn.
1/3

Hey look a blue Saltfield Recluse

Grade: C

Re-cap

White
A 6
B 3
C 4
D 3

Blue
A 5
B 3
C 5
D 3

So there you have it, those are the While and Blue Cards of Eventide. Now I guess there is just one thing left to do.

Crowd: Get him!

Uh never mind I got to get out of here!
