MDV Featured Article - These are a Few of My Favorite Things. - by Cashew - posted 9/3/08 - discuss here

Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens
Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens
Brown paper packages tied up with strings
These are a few of my favorite things

On a recent episode of Last Comic Standing a comedian recited these lyrics and commented on how bizarre they truly are. He had a good point; these are the kind of lyrics that an alcohol-riddled homeless person might write. The bit stuck with me and as I was looking at a recent card a shocking realization occurred. My favorite Magic cards are truly bizarre as well. I've seen a few others talk about theirs too, and I realized maybe I'm not the only one who has some oddball favorites.

Today, some of us are going to share a few of our favorite things:

Cashew
Color: Green
Set: Fallen Empires
Card: Su-Chi
Artwork: Gilder Bairn
Artist: Ron Spencer (Thallid, Sapphire Leech, Ronom Serpent)
Tribe: Golems
Deck: Rouge Brutal Bitter (Extended - BG - Aggro Control)

A custom homebrew deck evolved from my earlier deck Thallid Shooter and originally inspired by Chris Pikula's Rogue Dead Guy Ale (hence the name homage). It's a Dark Confidant-driven power Aggro deck utilizing extremely fast play and one-three drop monsters.

Artist: Zoltan Boros & Gabor Szikszai (Dust of Memories, Electrolyze, Poison the Well)
Tribe: Shapeshifters
Deck: Coin Chaos (Classic - Red - AltWin Deck)

Everybody loves coin flip decks. This is a simple version that uses the usual suspects Krark's Thumb and Chance Encounter to get achieve victory.

Color: Black
Set: Onslaught
Card: Boros Swiftblade
Artwork: Brom's Fortitude, aka Greel, Mind Raker
Artist: Donato Giancola (Razia, Boros Archangel; Tolsimir Wolfblood)
Tribe: Elementals
Deck: Eventide Boros (RW - Extended - Aggro)

This is a combat-heavy deck based on the Boros guild style blitz attack. The only way to win is to knock the opponent down, and knock them down fast. Early cards like Recruit and Lasher will give you an advantage off the bat, while Figure of Destiny grows into a winning card. Other staples such as Boros Swiftblade help ensure that your creatures can slice through towards an opponent for a couple extra turns.

Card: Counterspell
Artwork: Aleski Briclot's Jace Beleren
Artist: Aleski Briclot
Tribe: Enchantresses
Deck: Wizard Tribal FTW (Blue - Tribal: Wizard - Classic)

Further proof that A) Luther is a mean S.O.B and B) Control is fun. The aim of this deck is to drop Wizards that net you cards or filter your deck in the earlier stages so you can grab lands and counterspells to ruin your opponent's game plan.

Deck: Big R/G Aggro (Standard - RG - Aggro)

The following is Zvi Mowshowitz's Pro Tour Hollywood deck. It's a fairly straight forward to the point Red-Green Beatdown deck. The thing is no matter how simple these decks seem, they always tend to work; proof that Red-Green Aggro continues to leave a major footprint on Standard.

Copying, cloning and stealing your creatures
Infinite combos and tons of Shapeshifters
All join together in a deck of my dreams
These are a few of my favorite things.

Watching what chaos my minion brings

Deck: Aussie Assault (UBR - Standard - Combo Deck: Seismic Assault-Swans of Bryn Argoll)

This is a deck from Australian Aaron Nicastri making waves on the Standard theme. Driving off an easy to achieve infinite combo on Swans, it turns mass card draw into a recurring free nuke that's nearly impossible to stop. Expect to see more Swan decks making headlines now.

Deck: Legacy BW Confidant (BW - Legacy - Aggro-Control)

This deck is based on Chris Pikula's 2nd place Deadguy Ale deck at GP Philly. You disrupt early with discard and land destruction, then clean up with pumpable Shades and Knights. Main deck Withered Wretch can be savage, Dystopia is awesome against Survival, and a first-turn Hypnotic Specter can just wreck some decks.

Dazboot
Color: Blue
Card: Reclaim
Artist: Unknown
Tribe: Wizards
Deck: Daz's version of SunnySideUp (UGR - Combo Deck: Second Sunrise - Extended)

Played by the French at Worlds 2006, this deck is a combination of mainly cards that are complete junk on their own, and yet bind together to make a powerful combo. You pop Lotus Bloom with a lot of artifacts to draw a lot of cards and follow it up with a Second Sunrise to draw more cards, hopefully finding another Second Sunrise or a Cunning Wish for Reclaim to do it all again. Once you empty your library, you use Conjurer's Bauble to infinitely recur a Second Sunrise until you either deal infinite damage with a Pyrite Spellbomb or force your opponent to draw his deck with a Cephalid Coliseum.

Deck: Processed (White - Classic - Combo: Angelic Chorus - Phyrexian Processor)

A fun and easy to build Combo deck. Processed uses some basic defense until the Processor-Chorus combo comes into play. From that point on, you dump all your life and gain it back with every Processor baby churned out. Meanwhile your basic defenses continue to check you while your Phyrexian army takes over the entire field.
