Random Wednesday #1: The wrong time to play Covenant of Minds

Wednesdays are now Random Wednesdays! That means I may or may not post a random thought about pretty much anything I feel like in this sporadically updated blog. Randomly, today's topic is actually relevant to MTG:
I'm messing around with Standard decks and trying different cards. The opposing deck has an active Bloodchief Ascension. I've managed to play my fifth land and have just now managed to draw a second Covenant of Minds, which are utterly spectacular against Bloodchief Ascension - NOT!
I'm at 10 life and I'm going to lose if I don't start drawing some action anyway, so I go ahead and play a Covenant. Wisely, the opponent has me put the top 3 cards into the graveyard and allows me to draw 5 cards. When the Covenant finishes resolving, the Ascension triggers make me lose 8 life (3 cards off the top plus the played Covenant all went to the yard). The fact that he also gains 8 life is irrelevant in this case, since mercifully, the opponent finishes me off with a Lightning Bolt.
And that's the wrong time to play Covenant of Minds!
