Battlegrounds was awesome. If they had advertised it to players outside Magic and bothered to update it as promised, it could have been successful. While story mode didn't have much replay value, PVP was amazing - even with only 70 spells. But a competetive game depends on having a lot of players; with no commitment to advertising or upholding promises, there was little chance of success from the start.

Just to clarify, that's not how this sort of stuff works . For all we know, the game could have been in development for some months and they may be announcing it only now.

If I recall correctly, StarCraft 2 had been in development for a couple of years before they decided to announce it .

EDIT:

The pay-as-you-go model should be familiar to those who played Magic on table tops, or the online PC game. And the gameplay will likely feel something like Dungeons & Dragons: Miniatures Game, the tabletop war game also published by Wizards of the Coast.
I don't know how true this statement is, since no one else seems to have reported this particular feature. However, I hope like heck that it isn't true because needing to purchase virtual booster packs with real money would almost completely kill my interest in this game :[.

It has been in development for awhile now. They trademarked the name months ago. Rumors of a Magic related MMORPG in development have been out and about since early this year. I highly doubt they announced it before ever starting development. Especially since the game is almost in its beta phase.

There has been no announced pricing scheme or much at all. Anything at this point is speculation, but being an MMORPG they are going to suck money out of you on a regular basis if you play. They did advise regular expansions though. Popular schemes I could see being used:
1. If packs exist:
Model styles to look at: Pox Nora, paper MTG, Battleforge.
a. Pack MicroTransactions: Various pack prices and formats.
b. Elite Membership: Monthly fee, special bonuses, "free packs" each month.

2. Microtransactions model:
Model styles to look at: Xbox Live, Facebook Apps, Maple Story, Dungeons & Dragons Online.
a. Free Play: Standard features are free, life is made easy via purchases. Lots of content is locked without pay. Tons of cosmetic extras if paid for.
b. Monthly Fee Option: Pay a monthly fee. Almost all content is free, but often put on real life timers. Similar to D&DO pay model.
c. Regular Expansion: Major standard content, tons of extra content for $10 a pack. Similar to Xbox Live expansions, Everquest 2.

3. Typical MMORPG
Monthly Fee. Major expansions = buy. Regular additional content.

I'd expect one of those. Never know.

SOE uses many of the models. Particularly:
1a,b: PoxNora, Legends of Norrath, Star Wars Galaxies Trading Card Game
2c: Everquest 2
3: Everquest, Vanguard, Star Wars Galaxies,

They also offer a Realm Pass
http://station-access.station.sony.com/
Which basically lets you play all Sony Station Games for a 29.99 fee and gives you a lot of stuff free. Most of their games except Pox Nora are included in this at this time.

You will pay for this game beyond the box. I can almost guarantee that.

They say that there will be a few single player missions... Or did I misread it? If so, hurray!

Yeah, I'm guessing this will be something like Pox Nora or perhaps Battle Forge. The main difference between the two being Real Time versus. Turn-Based Tactical Strategy games. Both of those had single player aspects despite being multiplayer driven.
