Very nice, though I would have liked to see a little on instant speed trade discards versus sorcery brute-force hand disruption spells. Nicely done though: I like it.

Ive always liked discard and it was nice to see an article about it. I had no idea that there were so many instant speed discard spells. Ill have to dig out those Piracy and Funeral Charms.

Ahh, another well-written article. His are as addictive as c*ack!
I love discard, ever since setting my eyes on Hymn all those years ago. And yes, it hurts control decks to the core (I've been on both ends of the Swamps so to speak). Will you be touching on the different kinds of discard (small, one-card discards and expensive, whole-hand wipers)? What about discard as an s/b option? Which type do you choose as tech for game 2? These topics have been brought up in the course of deck-tuning in the forums, so maybe its a good idea to talk about it. Cheers. |

Actually, I might have to do a part 3
No, I actually go into the mental warfare that is present in the discard battle.

One thing I would like to see in future parts of these articles would be: How do you win? I understand discard, it's disruptive, obnoxious, evil, and all in all just plain fun! But it's putting the nail in the coffin that I just have a hard time doing. The only win condition that I saw in your deck was the Shadowmage Infiltrator, is it just 20 turns of him? What are your thoughts on Megrim or The Rack? Keep 'em rolling!

Re: MOMP: Newton’s Theory of Discardability – Part One. - by Chris Newton
I did not go into winning the game, I just talked purely about theory. The deck is able to do some nasty things. You can play big fat black flying guys who may happen to cost BB and remove five discard spells from your graveyard, or you could play something like Razormane Masticore who doubles as creature removal (mix him with Gibbering Decent ((correct name??)) and you skip your upkeep and just pound on peoples head with the Masticore.
Personally, I just beat people up with the Infiltrator and Cutpurse, but I am built mentally for playing two games in one hour and not giving you a chance ever I always was the last game finished up.Afterthought: I ended up calling my discard deck: Ground and Pound. It never was aggressive, I just worked you to the ground and then punched on you until you were at zero life. Had the Rack came to mind while working on the deck, I would have definately included four. Heck, I could write an article all about my theory on the Rack alone The Rack has some serious... SERIOUS mental warfare written all over it. Until you sit and ponder the world through the Racks perspective, you have not seen the other side of Magic.

the crack comment just got it's third vote of approval. anyway beautiful article but i just never could get the kill in with discard decks so i let them fall to the wayside. Then again i never could do discard like you just showed, doesn't help when 2 out of the 5 people you play plays elfs.

A very enjoyable article, all around. I never realized how much instant speed discard there was out there. Don't forget Nezumi Shortfang, too.
Reading this made me want to dig out my 4 Funeral Charms and get some Small Poxes, for a deck I was tinkering with. Or possibly make some alterations to my ninja deck. I look forward to the next article or two in this series, to see how it expands upon the ideas presented in this one.

I am actually built the same way, the problem is my opponents around here are not, so when I bust out my control and long-chain combo decks they usually get upset...

Re: MOMP: Newton’s Theory of Discardability – Part One. - by Chris Newton
Then you need a Mono-White deck that gains life at really slow paces. My old one used Zealot en-Del to gain one life a turn, Contemplation would gain me a point as I cast spells, and cards like Spirit Warden also gain you tiny smidgets of life that individually do not seem excessive enough to deal annoying, but by the time they get around to trying to kill you, you have amassed an army and 75 life. What are they going to do? Wrath and kill off thier army? No, they are just going to keep attacking, hoping to widdle away at you and your little tiny 1/1 protection from creatures (can't remember his name) kills them 20 turns later.
![]() I need to write an article about my life theory too

Funny you mention that, I had my Martyr-Tron deck banned from casual play... =D
Tynion, I think we need to play a couple of games at some point and just see how far we can take the mental warfare!

Re: MOMP: Newton’s Theory of Discardability – Part One. - by Chris Newton
The irony of the entire thing is that when I play, I don't even play hard control, I normally best play Aggro-control and alternate control (LD, discard, resource control)
Rarely do I sit with Islands and counter things.
