Fit the Flavor 2008 Contest - Discussion

Guidelines:

• All entries must be posted in the forum, in the thread that will be provided for you, for registration. You will be registered by simply posting your entry. Do not PM your entry to any Judge or Administrator.
• You must submit your entry no later than Friday of the week that the current round begins.
• The deadline for editing you entry will be the Sunday following that Friday. (Two days later)
• Your registered design must be in accordance to the rules that are set forth in these Guidelines,
• Design Rules, and Contest Rules, and according to the Contest Description provided above and at the top of the registration thread for this contest. All cards not following these rules will be disqualified.
• Make your card as flavorable as possible, as we are still The Site for the Casual Player.
• Do NOT post a card picture or link to a picture, just post the text version of your card.
• You may submit only one entry per round per flavor text. In the case a person submits more than one, only the first will be accepted. If you want to change your submission, edit your original post.

Design Rules:

• Your card can not include ante, flipping (ie. Chaos Orb, Falling Star, etc.), or any other mechanic of the game removed by Wizards of the Coast over the years.
• Your card should be designed to be part of a typical Magic: The Gathering expansion set, not Celixia, nor any other alternate expansion set (Unglued, Unhinged, Portal, etc.) released by Wizards in the past, present, or future. You may use mechanics found in expansions that are not carried into the Core Set. However you may not create your own mechanic.
• Do not use any symbols during your registration. This includes, but is not limited to: color symbols, tap symbols, etc... just use 12XWUBRG, T:, and Q:.
• Please note that you are to make a balanced card.

Contest Rules:

• Registration begins immediately! Get to work now!
• Following the registration, which will end on a Friday, there will be two days to edit your submission.
• The submissions will be judged by Tynion who will post his results in a timely manner.
• Each and every Monday following for the duration of the contest (four weeks) there will be a new Flavor Text found in the article provided for you. You are responsible for keeping up with the contest. Do not ask if you can submit an entry for a previous week.
• All Guidelines, Design Rules, Contest Rules, and Descriptions are subject to change at anytime.
• You will be notified by a posting at MagicDeckVortex.com in this event.
• All entries are to be submitted in the forum thread found here.
• Any discussion regarding the contest shall take place in this thread.

It's a reversal on a popular saying/song in America - "When the going gets tough, the tough get going." Meaning when you have a problem (especially a hard one), you don't give up. The quote we were given was the opposite in that when the going gets tough, you quit and walk away.

Love the title of your card, Cogline, just the kind of oddball word they like to use. If only someone would make a Defenestration card!

In that case, I have a question about my card and a couple hopefully helpful suggestions on another card:

Question: Should my card be costed 3U, 2UU, or maybe even 2WU? About the amount of colored/colorless mana, I think the spirit of the card's uses asks for it to be splashable, but it might be a bit too strong to leave it with only one colored mana. The "return to hand" part definitely makes it Blue, but WotC has been transferring "unless you pay X" to White lately. Blue still gets a little "pay X" in counters, so I think I'm comfortable with the mono-colored version.

Suggestions: hamsandwich's Throg, Underpaid Assassin almost certainly wants to be an Assassin creature type, because Assassin is in the name. Also, I wonder if he would prefer to make the sacrifice trigger on an opponent's creature coming into play, rather than the opponent playing a creature. The way it is is fine, of course, but I wondered if it wouldn't be desirable to have the option of killing the played creature, if possible.

thank you drathro for noticing my card and its inequities. i couldn't quite put my finger on it, but i could tell the wording was off. i will probably swap the name and creature type before the deadline. also, it wouldn't be out of the question to make your card a blue/white hybrid(going along with the shadowmoor stuff)...

I would guess 2UU if not more. Compare to Propaganda. This prevents non-vigilance creatures from attacking unless they pay 2 (abusable point), and can be hella-crazy with Ensnare-type cards + its effect on creatures with tapping abilities, which could also be bad. 2WU would probably work, but I'm not getting much of a White vibe from it.
