Very funny article. Good coffee-break reading. I love lite and pauper decks, so this was right up my street, and the two writers complimented each other well, making it an enojyable read.

Where can I buy tickets to the heavyweight-cage-grudge-match of the century? Ladies and gentlemen, it's The Rabbi-Sammich versus Vamp-Britania!!

Luth, I'd like to get in on a match when ever you are ready to step out of the minor leagues. You have my number, give me a call sometime...

(I enjoyed the read. It was very funny, and I never get tired of the condiment jokes)

Would it look cowardly if I decided to ignore that post entirely and pretend I never read it? Thought so....

LOL; sure Tynion - how about you and I go at it in another Mini Article only to make it more fun; let's get audience involvement and get the general public to decide our budget and format; you game?

Very well Luther, you are on. May the best breathing man win.

That was a very fun reading
However I must say the rivalry between you two was the best point (although very enjoyable). Thus I'd have liked a summary of your duel

Next thing, the focus on the said rivalry made the choice of cards less understandable...

Aladdin: glad you enjoyed it, we have not played yet, though, i don't think i'd have a chance without my sideboard, i must give props to the rats. Which card choices did you not understand... anything in particular, or would you just have liked more explanation in general?

one thing we missed was the voting button...

Luther: i am ready for the harvest.

Re: [Mini-Article] Design on a Dime: The Lunch Meat Edition! - by hamsandwich & Luthe

Well, both decks make sense to me...
You Ham started with a "bad rare" and tried to make the most out of it, which allowed for some power for the remaining cards. Luther started off a more expensive but deadly set up.... How did you decide on that strategy ? Do you feel one is better than the other ?

I think that what I'd have liked to see more developped is the process you went through to find budget options.
It is far easier to find non-budget, tournament information than budget one. Maybe this could have been done by saying (example incoming): "so I want plenty of creatures to sacrifice to Phyrexian Soulgorger. Good ol' Sengir Autocrat comes to my mind, but is out of budget, so, instead of token production, I'll go with dredge recursion..."
Something like that, giving more references to cards you didn't use would be cool We'd actually feel the brainstorming challenge that building on a budget is.

So... did you use reference articles ? your elephant memory ? were there important key words when you searched The Gatherer ? or was it that you secretly cheated in DBB's desk ?
I hope that makes sense However, I do understand that would probably require a longer article

Yikes, I didn't realize there was a follow-up to this article. I don't want to steal any thunder, so I respectfully withdraw my challenge until afterwards.

Possible idea for a future design challenge: All cards played must be rare. It's not budget (obviously) but it could be fun to design and read maybe?

Chicken - Tangible proof that Tynion is a wuss; you saw it here first folks!

LOL; yes we need to play the match out against one another and post a follow up but that doesn't stop us working on the preliminary parts of our article.

!!!!!!!

Wuss? Where is my gauntlet! I shall smack thee in thy pintoothed grill!

A very nice thought Daz, most of my Magic career came as a result of playing a million rares in a deck.

Re: [Mini-Article] Design on a Dime: The Lunch Meat Edition! - by hamsandwich & Luthe

The article was well written, and the rivalry was fun as well, but what I really read articles for are the decks.

These decks were interesting, to say the least. As usual I tested them out a bit, just to see how they played out.

Luther's rat deck has that Marrow-Gnawer combo, but it's a shame that there aren't any good inexpensive tutors to help out - I guess Night Dealings is as good as it gets on this budget.

I had a few on-budget ideas that I think could be good. To help survive into assembling the combo, I'd suggest removing the three Runeboggles (which rarely seem to counter a spell) and one Carrion Rats (which almost never actually deal damage) for a playset of one of my favorite cards ever, Crypt Rats. Yes, I know that activating Crypt Rats will probably also kill your entire team, but it can keep you from losing, and its damage puts counters on Night Dealings. Plus, its a rat. You could also consider Pestilence Rats as a slighty tougher supplement to Swarm of Rats. (Personally, I'd pull the rest of the Carrion Rats for some Pestilence Rats.) On the plus side, Condescend and Perplex both do fine double-duty, if you need to control for a while instead of beating down.

hamsandwich's Soulgorger deck was pretty fun, but I do have one suggestion to make: cut Phyrexian Soulgorger! It just gets chump-blocked for the one turn it manages to stay in play. Maybe I'm not playing the deck right, but it just never worked for me. On the other hand, the excellent Stinkweed Imp and Twisted Abomination lived up to their usual high standards.

Thanks for the read and the decks - I'm looking forward to seeing how bad ham's sideboard is for Luther's rats...

I still don't think a pile of lunchmeat or a "king of the undead" can best me in a budget match. I especially don't think that a hot-headed editor could best me... ever. (Bring it Chris, bring it.)

Great article guys. I loved the decks and the rivalry. Can't wait to see how the game plays out.
