[ALA] Ultimatum Cycle

This brought to you by those guys in MTGSally who work the Orb to death and have too much free time. We already knew one of these, but I'm putting them all up just to show the complete cycle. Note, they're all rares.

Brilliant Ultimatum
Sorcery
Reveal the top five cards of your library. Target opponent separates those cards into two piles. Remove one of those piles from the game, and put the other into your graveyard. Until end of turn, you may play cards removed from the game this way without paying their mana cost.

Clarion Ultimatum
Sorcery
Choose five permanents you control. For each permanent, search your library for a card with the same name as that permanent and put it into play tapped. Then shuffle your library.

Violent Ultimatum
Sorcery
Destroy three target permanents

Cruel Ultimatum
Sorcery
Target opponent sacrifices a creature, discards three cards, and loses 5 life. Return target creature card from your graveyard to your hand. Draw three cards. You gain 5 life.

Titanic Ultimatum
Sorcery
Until end of turn, creatures you control get +5/+5 and gain first strike, lifelink and trample.

SUPA TIMMA!!!

Re: [ALA] Ultimatum Cycle

Cruel ultimatum = WOW,

Clarion ultimatum = OMG

Brilliant ultimatum = JEEZUS Christ that could be nasty.

Titanic Ultimatum = a multicolored redonkulus overrun

Violent Ultimatum = meh, it's nice, but not that spectacular in my opinion.

Re: [ALA] Ultimatum Cycle

Brilliant Ultimatum & Clarion Ultimatum - Sweet! Both pretty good spells for obvious reasons. The Brilliant Unltimatum seems a little iffy though... I'd want to back it up with some library stacking just to be sure. With the kind of mana required to play it you're unlikely to be having trouble playing expensive cards... so you'd need to make sure you played several good cards, rather than just something like a huge fatty.

Violent Ultimatum - That's it? Sure it's a powerful effect, but I'm left really underwhelmed by this one. I guess it's just the simplicity of it... for that cost I want flashy and wordy, dammit.

Cruel Ultimatum - I had to change my pants when I saw this. This is the sort of thing that made Violent Ultimatum look kinda dull. Is this the stronger of the two? I don't really care... look at all those different swings!

Titanic Ultimatum - "TIMMAH!" . As said, basically an even more lethal overrun. But does overrun really need that much help? I guess overkill is always fun... but it can still be ruined by a holy day, so you're still running a risky over-commit, right? I guess the advantage with this over overrun is that you could attack with fewer creature for the same punishing damage.

Re: [ALA] Ultimatum Cycle

These are all way too much for my tastes. How the heck are you ever going to get a deck that can play these cards reliablity in more than a 1 shot. I guess maybe a revamp of Solar Flare could pull it off, but there is no good mana engine for Flare right now besides Wake which is too slow again.

People trying to play these slow decks are going to be litteraly torn apart by RDW,Boros Wins, and the likes. Especially with Ajani Vengant neutralizing your major threats even if you get them out.

Re: [ALA] Ultimatum Cycle

Violent Ultimatum's kind of a snore, but other than that ZOMG GIV PLZ.

By the way, am I the only one who thinks that these should have been mythic? They feel much more mythic than the CDDE cycle, at least.

Re: [ALA] Ultimatum Cycle

I'm sorry; I thought the mark of a good card design was in the subtle mixture of flavor and power - I'll drowning in power and in truth it tastes bitter.

I think I'll stick to my quick run spells thank you.

theirs a reason they arn't mythic. On the whole, they're not that good. Just think about it. a 7!!! mana spell. most aggro decks win before they even come close to that much mana. and the color intensity makes it even more difficult.

.....less important. almost none of the established T2 decks can run these. (kithkin, fae, elves, etc)

so thats why they are rare and not "mythic". besides, if they were the mythic i pulled...id be upset. in comparison to the planeswalkers we already have....these pale in their shadow

Re: [ALA] Ultimatum Cycle

That's no reason not to make them mythic. Mythic slots are reserved for cards with an impressive, epic feel, not because they happen to be good cards. And that description fits these cards perfectly. Regardless of how good or bad they are, they have an undeniably epic feel to them.

Besides which, you're being extremely narrow-minded. Just because they happen to suck tournament-wise, that doesn't mean that nobody wants them. I myself am very much looking forward to two of them, and I know that some people in my playgroup are going to be wanting others.

Re: [ALA] Ultimatum Cycle

i think briliant is wrong/incomplete (just in wording) i think it should be "an opponent seperates them into 2 piles. choose a pile. you may play cards from the chosen pile...bla bla bla".

Re: [ALA] Ultimatum Cycle

Just need a crafty way of playing them (hideaway comes to mind, go grump ) and you'll ravage an opponent badly. These will be nice finishers in limited too.
