Once again, someone tell us that we are idiot, and once again, this someone is true. Good article Tynion, it definitelly make me rethink a bit about a few coming cards (although I am far from the most vocal during spoiler season.)

Cool Re: Memories of an Old Magic Player: A Perspective... Recrossing the River Jordan. -C

Well, tossing out an Ultimatum as being playable depends on what people like to play. In serious / tournament games I prefer fast with lots of blow-stuff-up (B/R Goblins, etc.).

In some casual games, against players who don't mind too much stupid brokenness, I like the crazy combo stuff.

I pulled off a Titanic Ultimatum without much trouble and dealt 24 trample damage with 3 creatures (that's after blocking, 24 damage trampled over..)

But then I was using a Sachi-Orochi Leafcaller-Freed from the Real infinite mana engine, so I also played out my entire hand, drew several more cards and played all of them just to be thorough on that same turn (might have been 5th - as soon as I dropped Sachi, the ball just keeps rolling and rolling...)

Sure, it takes a lot of mana-acceleration to get up to seven mana (getting it by turn 4 is pretty hot, btw.), but getting 3 different colors is not tough at all - I use things like chromatic star & manamorphose all the time. As mentioned in the article, if you're playing green, there is no reason to not have access to any color you want: Birds of Paradise, Manamorphose, Fertile Ground, Leafcaller, etc. etc.

I like the article, but I have a small bone to pick with you. You called the people who posted in the thread idiots for the most part correct??? Well I have to say I posted, as well as Alladin, that I was looking forward to them and doing crazy stuff with them. Still this is just a small bone and one of little concern. Good article, enjoyed it for the most part and as always it makes me look forward to your next.

I missed this the first time around.

Amusing. What's not so amusing is my memory of getting Violent Ultimatum'd in Alara block matches against 5CC... followed by Cruel Ultimatum ewwwww

I still stand by my initial impression of these cards: Dream Halls.

My group were idiots, too. We underestimated their playability. Even with mana ramp. Then one of us (not me) figured out that the Ultimatums work well with the Hideaway lands.

Now Kobolds scare us.

I agree, and I did in fact get to laugh evilly the first time I resolved a Cruel Ultimatum on someone, and it was in a draft no less! We really need more high-quality reality checks like this one to keep us all on the right track, particularly during rumour seasons.

Will there be a perspective about 2010 coming? I would like additional takes on the changes to core and replacement of things like Wrath of God.

For the most part I love this series. The reminicing of the Pre-Tempest days is very enjoyable. I stumbled onto this series and am quite fond of it, makes me smile a bit at my beginning days.

Yes. One was supposed to be published last night but I didn't have time to finish it. And I'm not sure what I'll be able to do tonight after I get back from work. No worries, though. They are coming very, very soon!
