June 2009 - MCC - Submissions Thread
Keywords have played a huge part in building the foundations of Magic as a game. Keywords have existed ever since the beginning and have only become more prominent ever since. As such, I’ve decided to name this round Keyword Extravaganza!
In this round, participants can design any card they like. However, that card must have at least three seperate keywords on it. (If you have any questions about a specific keyword, don’t just up and use it. Feel free to ask me via PM is I will count it or not.) Note: Your keywords don't have to actually affect the card itself. An instant that says, "Target creature gains haste, trample and flying until end of turn." will count as having three keywords on it. A little more on this later, first let’s go through the annoying basic stuff... Aesthetics: 5/5 Artistry: 5/5 Creativity: 5/5 Balance: 10/10 Design: 10/10 TOTAL: 35/35 In case you don’t know what these words mean... Aesthetics: Does your card attract attention, or is it an eye-sore? If your card looks pretty, you get your points here. However, I’m a person who pays much attention to many small details. If I see a single thing out of place, I’ll most likely dock points. Also, be careful about using those alternate card layouts - sometimes I’ll let you get away with it, but most of the time I think they look ugly. Artistry: Does the art you find for your card fit your actual card? If you do the art yourself even though you’re horrible at drawing, chances are I’ll give you your points here simply for the effort. Creativity: Is your idea original, or taken from somewhere else? If your submission is new and exciting, no problem - but if your idea is tired and beaten say buh-bye to some valuable points... Balance: Would your card totally revamp an entire archtype of decks? If your card could win games entirely on its own, chances are you’re going to lose points. Don’t make your cards too weak either, cuz you’ll lose points that way too. The rarity of your card comes into play here as well. Design: Could / Would WotC ever print something similar to this, or would they spit at the idea of something like this existing in their game? Simple as that... Here’s some basic guidelines - failure to comply with these guidelines may result in point-loss or even DQ: 1) As always, stick to the Magic-multiverse. 2) Use block-specific keywords sparingly. I am allowing them, but if you intend on using one, I had better be able to picture your card fitting into whichever set you intend on using your keyword from. (Sprout Swarm is a good example of this) 3) Your card can be any color and of any type. Other than that, you’re free to roam. Everyone knows the basic rules, but in case there’s any newbies around: Now on to the standard rules. 1) Your card must be in card form. This means you'll have to do extra work beyond simply designing the card. First, you'll need a way to render the card. I highly recommend the Magic Set Editor (http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net) as it's still highly updated, and is very simple to use. The best looking renders are done by hand in a Photoshop program, but this is not necessary. You will also need to find a website to host the image for it to be submitted. There are numerous free ones out there if you don't have access to a web host already. One I know to work personally that just requires registration and is very easy to use is Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/). Or you can simply just attach it to your thread. Which leads to one last thing you have to find for your card - art. 2) All artwork should be credited and non-copyrighted. While it may be very hard to find out who made a random image you rip straight off an image search. I highly recommend you locate galleries that will let you know who drew it while drawing it. Two massive galleries that you should know are Elfwood (http://www.elfwood.com) and deviantART (http://www.deviantart.com/). Make sure you check the artist's profile page throughly to see if they are copyrighted are not. You can even go the extra step and ask for permission, which I highly encourage. It is essential that you credit them on the card as well. 3) Your entry must submitted by June 25th (last date for entries and edits is the 25th) Simple enough? Submit, edit, change as many times as you want until that date, then there will be no more. 4) Submit your entry in this thread. This thread is for submission only, there will be a discussion thread created for comments on others cards or talking about the contest itself. A small description and/or explanation of your entry is acceptable. 5) Your card must be balanced. Do not expect to win if you create some off the wall insane creature that has every ability for 10 mana and is a 9/5. The goal is to create a card that could seemingly be printed. From the flavor to the mana cost to the power level of the card - all parts are considered. 6) Do not create a new keyword. Use existing keywords, be careful when using block based ones such as Affinity, Splice, and Radiance. In the past, we've allowed some leniency with things such as Protection from X or Xcycling. Don't stretch it too far though. EDIT: Kingez36 sent me some questions via PM and I figured I would share those questions with everyone, as well as the answers to these questions. First, the PM I received: Quote:

Re: June 2009 - MCC - Submissions Thread
I decided to realize the Uberthopter and make the Lepitothoper. Lepito (or butterfly's scientific family) are kin to the Ornithopter in terms of construction and build. Built smaller and faster, their gears initially burn hot and fast enabling super fast launch speeds. Without a proper mana infusion to stabilize the machinery, most are found shattered miles away from their launch within a couple of minutes. For the record, I couldn't get Grave Blossom or Enemy of Life to work, because I found them perfect as is. Any addition I felt took away from their design. Mindless Aggression 1RRGG
Enchantment (Rare) Threshold — As long as you have seven or more cards in you graveyard creatures you control get +2/+0, and have trample. Hellbent — As long as you have no cards in hand creatures you control get +2/+0, and have haste. Render lacks art so text is all you get right now.

Re: June 2009 - MCC - Submissions Thread
Well, as it's been a quiet past while, I thought I might start getting into this. I may or may not be a frequenter, but I might just as easily be sporadic.
I do try, however against much of what I've seen, I'm not sure how well I might do. ![]() The best of luck, and many of these cards are amazing. Lokenta Mirana Edit: Slight edit. I thought it might be odd for a white creature to have deathtouch. I still fear it might be too powerful, but I am admittedly poor at judging that. Another Edit: Others agreed that it was too powerful, so made it a little more annoying to play (also increased the rarity). It's always mutable.
