July 2009 - MCC - Submissions Thread

Who wants a freebie?! The answer to that is, in fact, everyone. I mean, c’mon, who doesn’t love a good freebie? I know I do. How about you?

In this round, participants may design any card they like with the exception that their card must have a way to be able to play / cast it for free. Whether it be something simple and clear cut like Invigorate, or something sneaky and savvy like Dread Return. Use your imagination, and welcome to Who Wants a Freebie?

So, without further ado, the annoying stuff!!!

Aesthetics: 5/5
Artistry: 5/5
Creativity: 5/5
Balance: 10/10
Design: 10/10
TOTAL: 35/35

In case you don’t know what these words mean...

Aesthetics: Does your card attract attention, or is it an eye-sore? If your card looks pretty, you get your points here. Not only looks, but correct spelling, grammar, and correct wording apply here as well. I’m a person who pays much attention to many small details if I see a single thing out of place, I’ll most likely dock points.

Artistry: Does the art you find for your card fit your actual card? If you do the art yourself even though you’re horrible at drawing, chances are I’ll give you your points here simply for the effort. Scrunched, blurry, and otherwise ‘ugly’ arts will lose points.

Creativity: Is your idea original, or taken from somewhere else? If your submission is new and exciting, no problem - but if your idea is tired and beaten say buh-bye to some valuable points...

Balance: Would your card totally revamp an entire archtype of decks? If your card could win games entirely on its own, chances are you’re going to lose points. Don’t make your cards too weak either, cuz you’ll lose points that way too. The rarity of your card comes into play here as well.

Design: Could / Would WotC ever print something similar to this, or would they spit at the idea of something like this existing in their game? Simple as that...

Here’s some basic guidelines - failure to comply with these guidelines may result in point-loss or even DQ:

1) As always, stick to the Magic-multiverse.

2) By ‘free’, I’m referring to mana. Your card must have a built-in way to have a way to be able to play / cast it without using mana.

3) Your card can be any color and of any type.

NEW RULE!!!) Your card now must use the new M10 wording. If you’re not quite familiar with it, please ask around. I’m sure someone will help you - due to this being the first round for this, you may even ask me for advice regarding the new wording.

Other than that, you’re free to roam. Everyone knows the basic rules, but in case there’s any newbies around:

Now on to the standard rules.

1) Your card must be in card form.
This means you'll have to do extra work beyond simply designing the card. First, you'll need a way to render the card. I highly recommend the Magic Set Editor (http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net) as it's still highly updated, and is very simple to use. The best looking renders are done by hand in a Photoshop program, but this is not necessary.

You will also need to find a website to host the image for it to be submitted. There are numerous free ones out there if you don't have access to a web host already. One I know to work personally that just requires registration and is very easy to use is Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/). Or you can simply just attach it to your thread.

Which leads to one last thing you have to find for your card - art.

2) All artwork should be credited and non-copyrighted.
While it may be very hard to find out who made a random image you rip straight off an image search. I highly recommend you locate galleries that will let you know who drew it while drawing it. Two massive galleries that you should know are Elfwood (http://www.elfwood.com) and deviantART (http://www.deviantart.com/).

Make sure you check the artist's profile page throughly to see if they are copyrighted are not. You can even go the extra step and ask for permission, which I highly encourage. It is essential that you credit them on the card as well.

3) Your entry must submitted by July 25th (last date for entries and edits is the 25th) Simple enough? Submit, edit, change as many times as you want until that date, then there will be no more.

4) Submit your entry in this thread.
This thread is for submission only, there will be a discussion thread created for comments on others cards or talking about the contest itself. A small description and/or explanation of your entry is acceptable.

5) Your card must be balanced.
Do not expect to win if you create some off the wall insane creature that has every ability for 10 mana and is a 9/5. The goal is to create a card that could seemingly be printed. From the flavor to the mana cost to the power level of the card - all parts are considered.

6) Do not create a new keyword.
Use existing keywords, be careful when using block based ones such as Affinity, Splice, and Radiance. In the past, we've allowed some leniency with things such as Protection from X or Xcycling. Don't stretch it too far though.

Re: July 2009 - MCC - Submissions Thread

Concept: Build a card around the archetype: The Reluctant Hero

The Reluctant Hero has been defined by Joseph Campbell
- The hero may refuse the adventure or deny the ability to move beyond the status quo. The heralded event may even be ignored – All of these constitute the ‘Refusal of the Call.’
- The reluctant hero loses all desire to abandon his bliss, he does not want to take on the burdens of the world. Someone or thing may facilitate his miraculous return from apparent death. An overriding reason is necessary to bring the hero back to the world to save it.

How the card fits the concept:
You can not cast Vasher. No matter how hard you try, he will not willingly join your aid without motive. You can force him into play through magical means, but nothing short of bribery or the call of a piper will lure him into battle without him deeming it warranted. In this particular case, I chose to have him enter the battlefield if and only if you are being attacked by more creatures than you have on the battlefield. In those times of need and peril, Vasher will willingly enter the fray.

The character:
I'm rolling out my Sarpadian flavor yet again for a contest. Vasher once won me the Villian contest along time ago. I'm keeping the flavor just merely depicting him at a different time.

Spoiler:

Vasher, the Crusader
Widenby, Icatian Captial on Sarpadia
Age 26

At the age of 6, Vasher’s father was ousted as an Initiate of the Ebon Hand. Slipping into the night, his mother and him were taken into custody. Under excruciating torture they determined that Vasher’s mother as well was a member and consequently put her to death. Vasher, being so young, was taken in by the Order and raised as a squire. In order to free him from his parent's evil taint, Vasher was exposed to daily corporal mortification, believing that only through pain could he truly be cleansed. Every morning as a child, a monk of the order would flagellate him until he was old enough to do it himself.

As Vasher aged he became a full-fledged knight in the Order, but never rose into a leadership position. Extremely capable on the field and respected by his peers for his ability, his parent's dark lineage constantly hounded him. As the Farrelite cult spread its word across Icatia, Vasher couldn't help but sympathize with them. Like Farrel, Vasher hated the Ebon Hand to its core, and wished its destruction at any cost. The scars on his back and the memory of his parents served as lasting reminders of the Ebon Hand's evil. When the Farrelites led open rebellion after the fall of Trokair, Vasher lead a small band of the Order out of Widenby safely away from the rebelling populous.

As the weeks bore on, Vasher rescued other members of the Order and formed a small army that successfully rousted some of the surrounding villages free of Zealot control. With constant minor victories and keen leadership, he earned the surviving Order of Leitbur’s trust. With each passing month his army grew and word spread of his success. As Thrulls appeared across Icatian meant one thing and one thing only to Vasher, though. The Ebon Hand had done this all. Their mortal enemies had succeeded in destroying Icatia in a single blow, because they were too weak to crush them first. Vasher and his Order all took new oaths, but this time not to serve the Hand of Justice, whom had gone missing, but to eradicate the Ebon Hand.

In the Havenwood forest, on the foot of the Crimson Peaks, a Dwarf, Elf and Ebon Hand-led campaign mounted to retake their land from the slave races. In opposition to them, Vasher and his army rallied their own campaign to rid Sarpadia of the Ebon Hand once and for all; no matter the cost. As the two armies gathered towards an inevitable clash, the slave races linger in the outskirts watching, waiting to devour both sides and take all of Sarpadia for their own.

The armies met across the fields of Montford, with Vasher's Order riding down the Elf-Alliance. Having no choice, but to fight the swift mounted Order, the Elf-Alliance fought with intense ferocity. One side fueled by hatred and the other by desperation, the battle was fierce and bloody. As the day wore on it became clear both sides would wipe each other out, and as their numbers dwindled the Slave races made their strike. The howl of Goblins filled the air as the very plain seemed to move as a wave of Thallids moved across it. Behind it Thrulls shambled across the field as the sky began to fill with Orcish aura-fires. The Slave races routed the entire battlefield in a single massive push. The last thing Vasher saw from the distance as he retreated was Goblins feasting on singed flesh as the Thrulls began the process of dismembering corpses to expand their ranks.

The sky still burning red from the Orcish magics, Vasher slipped away into Havenwood leaving the handful of survivors behind. He had seen the results of his crusade, Icatia was defated. Stumbling into an abandoned cabin in the heart of the wood, he took stock of the wine cellar, and began the process of killing himself one bottle at a time.
