August/September 2009 - MCC - Submission Thread
Round 1 Description - August is MDV’s 7th birthday!!! In light of that, we’re going to be celebrating it this month. This round is gonna be a bit more straight-forward than most of the others, but hey that’s good too!
This month, players are to design a card of any type and color. However, their card must contain at least some form of the number seven in any part of the card aside from the flavor text. (The flavor text can have it too, but I want it to be on the actual card as well) Round 2 Description - C’mon, we all love MDV don’t we? The question is, why? Why do we love MDV? Well, my theory is that we love MDV because of the people in it. Yes, that means you. That’s why I’m dedicating this month’s MCC to the people of MDV. Participants are to make a card based around a current, or past, member of MDV. Now, just because I want you to make a card based upon a member of MDV, doesn’t mean that you have to make a creature card. Any card type will do if it fits flavorfully. There’s only two requests that I’m putting on your card. 1) The member you make a card of MUST have more than 250 posts. 2) You cannot make a card based on yourself. Since this round is based heavily upon the opinions of the members of MDV, I’m going to be asking a couple of my fellow MDV members to guest judge this round beside me. I believe this would be necessary as not only do the opinions of this months participants matter, but I think the opinions of the judges as well will be important this round. So, ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce to you this round’s guest judges! MZ and AE! Aesthetics: 5/5 Artistry: 5/5 Creativity: 5/5 Balance: 10/10 Design: 10/10 TOTAL: 35/35 In case you don’t know what these words mean... Aesthetics: Does your card attract attention, or is it an eye-sore? If your card looks pretty, you get your points here. Not only looks, but correct spelling, grammar, and correct wording apply here as well. I’m a person who pays much attention to many small details if I see a single thing out of place, I’ll most likely dock points. Artistry: Does the art you find for your card fit your actual card? If you do the art yourself even though you’re horrible at drawing, chances are I’ll give you your points here simply for the effort. Scrunched, blurry, and otherwise ‘ugly’ arts will lose points. Creativity: Is your idea original, or taken from somewhere else? If your submission is new and exciting, no problem - but if your idea is tired and beaten say buh-bye to some valuable points... Balance: Would your card totally revamp an entire archtype of decks? If your card could win games entirely on its own, chances are you’re going to lose points. Don’t make your cards too weak either, cuz you’ll lose points that way too. The rarity of your card comes into play here as well. Design: Could / Would WotC ever print something similar to this, or would they spit at the idea of something like this existing in their game? Simple as that... Here’s some basic guidelines - failure to comply with these guidelines may result in point-loss or even DQ: Round 1 Rules - 1) As always, stick to the Magic-multiverse. 2) Use the number seven in any way that you like. You could have a CMC of seven, an activates ability that costs seven, a creature who’s P/T is 7/7 or maybe even two number that ADD UP to seven. It’s your choice. 3) Your card can be any color and of any type. 4) Your card now must use the new M10 wording. Round 2 Rules - Here’s some basic guidelines - failure to comply with these guidelines may result in point-loss or even DQ: 1) Since this round is based upon actual people, you may stray away slightly from the Magic-multiverse. However, don’t stray TOO far. 2) As stated before, the MDV member you choose must have more than 250 posts and cannot be yourself. 3) Your card can be any color and of any type. 4) Please put both of your cards in the same post, in the correct order. Other than that, you’re free to roam. Everyone knows the basic rules, but in case there’s any newbies around: Now on to the standard rules. 1) Your card must be in card form. This means you'll have to do extra work beyond simply designing the card. First, you'll need a way to render the card. I highly recommend the Magic Set Editor (http://magicseteditor.sourceforge.net) as it's still highly updated, and is very simple to use. The best looking renders are done by hand in a Photoshop program, but this is not necessary. You will also need to find a website to host the image for it to be submitted. There are numerous free ones out there if you don't have access to a web host already. One I know to work personally that just requires registration and is very easy to use is Photobucket (http://photobucket.com/). Or you can simply just attach it to your thread. Which leads to one last thing you have to find for your card - art. 2) All artwork should be credited and non-copyrighted. While it may be very hard to find out who made a random image you rip straight off an image search. I highly recommend you locate galleries that will let you know who drew it while drawing it. Two massive galleries that you should know are Elfwood (http://www.elfwood.com) and deviantART (http://www.deviantart.com/). Make sure you check the artist's profile page throughly to see if they are copyrighted are not. You can even go the extra step and ask for permission, which I highly encourage. It is essential that you credit them on the card as well. 3) Your entry must submitted by September 18th (last date for entries and edits is the 20th) Simple enough? Submit, edit, change as many times as you want until that date, then there will be no more. 4) Submit your entry in this thread. This thread is for submission only, there will be a discussion thread created for comments on others cards or talking about the contest itself. A small description and/or explanation of your entry is acceptable. 5) Your card must be balanced. Do not expect to win if you create some off the wall insane creature that has every ability for 10 mana and is a 9/5. The goal is to create a card that could seemingly be printed. From the flavor to the mana cost to the power level of the card - all parts are considered. 6) Do not create a new keyword. Use existing keywords, be careful when using block based ones such as Affinity, Splice, and Radiance. In the past, we've allowed some leniency with things such as Protection from X or Xcycling. Don't stretch it too far though.

Re: August 2009 - MCC - Submission Thread
Both words in the name of the card are 7 letters long.
There are exactly 7 syllables in the name of the card. There are exactly 7 keyworded abilities on the card. There are exactly 14 syllables in the rules text, not counting numbers and symbols, (2*7) There are 7 colored mana symbols on the card. There are 7 globes in the set symbol The power and toughness total to 7. The card info (#/total) adds up to 7. The numbers in the rules text add up to 7. There are exactly seven instances of a number on the card. There are seven symbols in the rules text of the card. Both words in the illustrator line are 7 characters long. There are also 7 syllables in the illustrator line. The line under that has 7 letters in it.

<PLACEHOLDER>
Goblin Slot Machine ![]() Artifact Goblin Slot Machine comes into play tapped and doesn't untap during your untap step. Sacrifice a Goblin you control: Untap Goblin Slot Machine. You may activate this ability once per turn. Activate this ability only as a sorcery. ![]() , Discard your hand, : Draw seven cards. If you draw a Goblin, you may discard it from your hand to the graveyard and inflict damage to target creature or player equal to its converted mana cost. If you don't, discard all cards drawn."Mogg gamblers often go big or never come home." Changed around effect, made it useful for a goblin tribal decktheme. I might have made it too overpowered... Re: August 2009 - MCC - Submission Thread
This one is in the next set that I've started working on. It just so happens to fit this thread.
![]() ![]() Picked a different card, but still the same scenario. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Second card: ![]() Yes, borderline broken. Deliberately so - it's part of the flavor.
