Re: One Card to Rule Them All: Coastal Piracy

I pretty much enjoy game theory. You incorportaed a lot of that into it, so yeah, I liked it. The only thing I didn't really like was the absence of a plan-B or a way to get your centerpiece, should it get destroyed/countered/whatever. I don't know if a deck-total of 4 big and heavy hitters will be enough to get rid of an opponent, if your options constist of 3 Echoing Truths 4 Rune Snags and 4 Remands... Your smaller ones might not be sufficient, there. Alltogether, a good article, and a nice deck!

Thanks for the comments.

Having answers to your opponent's is a metagame issue. That's why I encouraged the reader to modify the deck as required. No deck is perfect against every deck.

EDIT: I put game theory in there?

Re: One Card to Rule Them All: Coastal Piracy

A bit. You had some explanations about what and when to make best use of the Piracy. You explained different applications for it. Yeah, there was some theorie involved... I don't really like the "OMG, this is the rockzor, check it out"-style of introductions to a deck... And no, I haven't been seeing any of those from you, ever, so that was just a general statement...

Re: One Card to Rule Them All: Coastal Piracy

I agree. This article is exactly the type of resource for which I decided to join this site. In fact, I think it's one of the best MTG articles I've read on the net so far. Many others describe combos or identify interractions between cards, but don't really get in and explain and dissect the interraction. They just write "this card and this card work great together". I liked that you highlighted the areas where the effect could be best leveraged and what to look for.

Not being very good at game theory myself just yet, the article got me thinking in all sorts of directions. Not just about the Coastal Piracy (which, incidentally I picked up after reading the article), but also about other possibilities. I'm burning up my favourite MTG search engine looking for various similar effects, and combing through my library looking for cards that I already own that might work with it.

I look forward to your next article.

Cheers,
Amadeus.

Re: One Card to Rule Them All: Coastal Piracy

Amadeus - Thank you for your comments. I'll be honest in saying I didn't realize I provided so much in the article. I was just talking about a fun card and it just so happened I dissected it and it's interaction with lots of other cards at the same time.

NOTE: I really need to watch out for typos! I found quite a few after re-reading my article just now.

Anyway, I hope my next two (which are written already) live up to the expectations this one set out.

Tumbs up to the featuring-card miniarticle! It will help lots of people.
I think adding a poll and vote for the next featuring card would be a great addition!

Nice title btw...

Thanks, Pingle Pats -- it's been a while since you've visited. Have you checked out my other One Card to Rule Them All articles? I have two in process, one of which will be posted for a top secret theme week.

Re: One Card to Rule Them All: Coastal Piracy

NOTE: This article has been re-posted as of 10/2. We are filling in some gaps with some older, good articles and this was one of them.

At least, I thought so.

Feel free to discuss. Especially if you hadn't read this article earlier in the year.

Hmm... I'm messing around with a deck using Niv-Mizzet along with Coastal Piracy. What do you all think?

(granted, it'd need HEAVY mana-fixing, given how much Niv-Mizzet costs to cast...)

Sounds like a blast! Maybe you'd like to post the deck in the Casual decks forum, so we could check it out?

Still an excellent article Streetz

I'll post it as soon as I fix the mana curve and figure a couple things out. Coastal Piracy is mana-intensive on its own, and Niv-Mizzet is even worse - and I'm not very inclined to add the Ravnica duals, given how it'd make the deck rather expensive money-wise...

Actually heart now is the time to pick them... with Ravnica rotating out of standard, you should be able(if you are a bargainer) to pick playsets of everything but fountain and breeding pool for around 20 bucks a SET.
